Pope Urges Senators
To Relax Bars for DPs
VATICAN CITY (JPS)—Pope
Pius XII recently asked a- group
of visiting American Senators to
consider revision of America's
immigration laws to aid in reliev-
Ing the plight of suffering ref-
ugees and displaced persons by
admitting some of them to the
United States.
The Senators, all members of
the Immigration and Naturaliza-
tion Committee, were told by the
Pontiff that "immigration today
presents entirely new problems."
"As always," he said. "the wel-
fare of the country must be con-
sidered as well as the- interests of
the individual seeking to enter,
and in the nature of things cir-
cumstances will ai time dictate a
law of restriction. But by the
same token, circumstances at
times will almost cry out for an
easing of the application' of that
'aw. Wise legislation will ever
be 'conscious of humanity and the
calamities and woes to which it
:s heir."
