Call to Youth
By MAYER BEN ZION
Active Zionist youth no longer
constitutes a mere handful of
Jewish youth.
Today, Zionism is real, practical
and magnetic . . . "the most
dynamic force in Jewish life."
As the vanguard of the new
maturing • generation, Zionist
youth vitally contribute to the
welfare of all Jewry, and the
world as well, and benefit them-
selves in so doing.
Yet, there are a large number
of misconceptions about Zionist
youth movements which are com-
mon among Detroit Jewish youth
of high school and campus age.
Numerous questions are asked:
"Why Zionism? What is Zionism?
What do Zionist youth think and
do, and how does it affect me?"
Zionist youth believ:
"We must strengthen the bond
between American Jewry and
Eretz Yisrael and actively sup-
port the rebuilding of the Jew-
ish National -Home."

Overseas Survivors, as part of the SOS emergency drive here
in Detroit, Mandell Berman, Campaign Director, announced
this week.
"We have only two requests to make of the Detroit Jew-
ish Community," Berman added,
"and these are that every family
should fill its SOS bag with vital-
ly-needed canned goods and that
one person out of every family
should volunteer to help collect
these bags on Dec. 7, the only day
we will have an all-community
collection."
The SOS bags will be sent to all
Detroit Jewish families along
with a list of the articles being
sent, overseas by the ;Joint Distri-
bution Committee, sponsor of
SOS, to supplement the relief and
reconstruction program which re-
ceives its funds through the Unit-
ed Jewish Appeal. In addition to
canned goods and good clothing,
needed comfort items include
books, toys, layettes, medical sup-
plies and cosmetics. The greatest
need is for canned food, but other
contributions will be gratefully
received on Dec. 7, Berman said.
Led by Berman and Mrs. Harry
Singer, regional SOS chairman,
volunteer drivers and "jumpers"
will canvas homes where the bags
were sent. Already pledged to
serve on the drive are members of
the Junior Service Group of the
Jewish Welfare Federation and
the Jewish Boy Scouts. Anyone,
of any age, with or without a car,
can help in some phase of the
drive, Berman emphasized.
Interested volunteers are invit-
ed to call Morris Miller at TE.

become better acquainted with
the needs underlying Jewish
communal activities, judging by
the requests received for pro-

Federation's recently formed
