On the Threshold of a Jewish State:

Agreement by 3 World Powers

By Jewish News Special Correspondent at the UN

LAKE SUCCESS, N. Y.—Observers at the general session
of the United Nations are confident that Jewry is on the threshold
of witnessing the establishment of an independent Jewish State
in Palestine as a result of the agreement reached between the
Russian and American delegations on Monday.
Dr. Herbert V. Evatt, chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee on
the Palestine Problem, speeded action by insisting on a General
'Assembly meeting on Tuesday.
All indications are that a favorable• decision will be reached
_
before the Assembly adjourns on Nov. 25, and Jewish leaders are
confident that the struggle for justice is nearing its end and the
period of unimpeded construction work and unlimited Jewish im-
migration soon will commence.
The agreement reached by the U. S.-Soviet delegations is a
result of the intercession of Canada's UN delegate, Lester B.
- Pearson, who assumed the strategic role of conciliator. His pro-
' posal called for the establishment of a commission that would be
responsible to the Security Council, to be responsible for the im-
plementation of partition proposals.

The compromise arrived at calls for the withdrawal of Brit-
ish troops by May 1, 1948, and the creation of Arab and Jewish
states by July 1.
Belief is current here that the decision of the major powers
to push through the proposed Palestine solutions will inspire
many neutral states to join in support of the international effort
to create a Jewish state.
British Cabinet Acts on Withdrawal of Troops
LONDON. (JTA)—Prime Minister Clement R. Attlee called
Viscount Montgomery, Chief of the Britigh Imperial Staff, and
the heads of the various armed_ services to a special emergency
meeting of the Cabinet Defense Committee. Attlee is reported to
have told the military leaders that they must produce a final plan
for the withdrawal of British forces from Palestine by Thursday,
when the full Cabinet was slated to meet.
Colonial Secretary Arthur Creech-Jones met with Foreign
Secretary Ernest Bevin shortly after receipt of a new United
States appeal urging the British government to agree to remain
at the head of the Palestine administration during the transition.

stolen by the Nazis from synagogues They destroyed throughout Europe and rescued by the
German Jewish community of Nuremberg, now is in the possession of the National Jewish
Welfare Board. It has been sent on a tour of it s 309 affiliated Jewish Centers. Pieces relating
to major Jewish Festivals, synagogues and Torah articles are shown in the three panels.

JERUSALEM (JTA)---E,stablishment of the Yishuv's Se-
curity Committee consisting of representatives of the Vaad
Leumi, JeWish Agency and the rightist "Citizens Bloc" was
announced at the meeting of the Vaad Leumi Tuesday. It was
learned here that David Ben-Gurion and the Citizens Bloc
had ,reached an agreement on the composition of the Security
Commission to include three rightist representatives, four
Agency and four Vaad Leumi leaders. This agreement is be-
lieved to foreshadow future agreements on the planning com
mittee which is to be entrusted with drafting a constitution.
and other legal matters.
Announcement also was made of the inauguration of a
drive for $2,000,000 for security purposes. .
David Remez, labor Zionist leader, asked, in the keynote
address at the meeting, for authorization for the Vaad Leumi
executive to speed the date for the National Assembly elec-
tions, to be held in January. Remez appealed to Agudath Israel
not to abstain from the • activities of the rest of the Yishui.r.
It is believed that there will be no dissenters from Assem-
bly elections, as in previous years.
Remez appealed to the Arabs not to permit themselves
to be incited against the Jews who, he said, want only peace,
He also condemned the extremists as a threat to the Yishuv's
independence.

Lifeline to Mercy--Save Lives Through

This film represents the lifeline of supplies for survivors. It is the
moving story of the SOS—the great movement of food and clothing
supervised by the Joint Distribution Committee with the aid of 16
national Jewish women's organizations and many other groups.

Six million pounds of food, provided by Detroit and 850 other
American Jewish communities, have been shipped from the national SOS
warehouse in Brooklyn (I).

More than 50 workers are employed to pack cartons of canned food
in crates (2)..

Nearly 42 per cent of the supplies consist of clothing—including
shoes and layettes (3) which supplement the regular JDC purchases with
funds of the United Jewish Appeal.
Pressed into bales and securely packed for export (4), the clothing
secured through the SOS appeals arrive in Europe for distribution among
the 1,500,000 Jewish survivors within two weeks after shipment from the
United States.
The Detroit SOS drive will be conducted from Nov. 30 to Dec.J.
All Jewish organizations must mobilize their forces immediately to assurd
success for this great life-saving effort.
