Close to 600 members . and friends of the Detroit chapter
of Hadassah were doubly-moved—by the eloquence of corre-
spondent-lecturer Ruth Gruber, and by the superb progress
of their Honor Roll drive—at the opening luncheon of the
campaign Oct. 1 at the Book-Cadillac.
At that time, when general solicitation was just starting,
Mrs. Julian Zemon, special gifts
chairman, and Mrs. Robert J.
Newman, Honor Roll chairman,
were able to report a total of
$71,370 in pre-campaign and or-
ganizational gifts, a long stride
toward the $100,000 Honor Roll
goal. Mrs. Joseph G. Fenton, gen-
eral solicitation chairman, urged
the assembled workers to make
an all-out effort not only to fulfill
the chapter's obligations toward
the national endeavor, but to top
the quRta, as` .a personal tribute
to the splendid leadership of
chapter president, Mrs. Harry L.
Jones.
The women of Detroit Hadas-
sah were further inspired to com-
plete their, fund-raising project
when they heard the stirring
words of the guest speaker, Dr.
Ruth Gruber, who, as correspond-
ent for the N. Y. Post, has re-
cently returned from Palestine,
Cyprus, and. Europe.
Dr. Gruber was one of the
many representatives of the world
press who accompanied UNSCOP
on its investigation tour. Al-
though, as a thinking Jewess, she
was deeply moved by the sights
of Europe and Palestine, the ma-
jority of the correspondents main-
tained a purely objective stand
throughout the investigation, Dr.
G,ruber told The Jewish News.
Since she was an accredited
American newspaperwoman, she
was given the same privileges as
the rest of the press corps, but
the Palestine Government, know-
ing that she -was Jewish, treated
her "coolly," she reported.
She emphasized to the Hadassah
women that the UNSCOP men,
although "united by their ignor-
ance," were favorably impressed
by what they "saw and touched"
on their trip through the Holy
Land. "We had a preview of what
Palestine might look like if there
were real peace—if the UN
should carry through the ma-
jority report," she declared.
Three times, Dr. Gruber said,
she left the committee, each time
to penetrate into a "deeper, more
tragic level of Hell." The first
was a visit to Cyprus, where
thousands of refugee children
must wait, parched, behind
barbed wire, while German pris-
oners-of-war are free to swim in
the surrounding area.
Her second trill was to the
Rothschild Hospital in Vienna,
which has been prominent in the
news of refugee treks from Ro-
mania in recent Weeks. She re-
turned to that pitifully jammed
hostel with the Uruguayan dele-
gate, who reiterated her state=
ment, "I have been in Hell."
Dr. Gruber's final visit before
returning to New York was on
the decks of the infamous Exo-
dus, 1947, which she described as
being "worse than any slave gal-
ley of antiquity." Nevertheless;
she emphasized, the Jews of the
Exodus "broke the British • Em-
pire . . . they were the Jews
whom the British Empire could
not kill."
As a result of her experiences,
Dr. Gruber is convinced that, the
Jews of America have it within
their power, , and must make it
their business to influence- the
American government so that
immediate relief will be provid-
ed for the refugees—the gates
of Palestine opened; and a JeW-
ish state established. She urged
the women to write and wire the
President, Secretary of State
Marshall and the UN delegates,
reminding them of their responsi-
bilities to humanity. So effective
was her plea, that, immediately
after her talk, groups of women
were seen headed directly for
the telegraph offices at the hotel.
'She complimented the Hadas-
sah members on their efforts, and
reminded them that the Youth
Alivah programs and the Hadas-
sah Medical Organization in Pal-
estine and on Cyprus were high
on the • list of positive elements
which favorably. impressed
UNSCOP.
Although not a member of-any
American Zionist organization,
Dr. Gruber's lectures and- dis-
patches are forceful contributions
to the Zionist cause.- She ex-
pressed the hope that her assign-
ments•will return her to Palestine
shortly. . -

cation, both religious and secular.
It will follow immediately a
two-day coriference of the board
of governors of the AAJE to take -
place at the Biltmore Hotel Oct.
18 and 19. During this conference,
the Board members, of whom
there are more than 100 repre-
senting a cross-section of the
country, will discuss the educa-
tional services rendered by the

Planning to visit New York these days? Then write in advance
for reservations to see Maurice Schwartz' excellent Yiddish produc-
tion of Palestine Hebrew novelist Ari Ibn-Zahav's "Shylock's Daugh-
ter." It is the Jews' answer to the unfortunate Shakespearean inter-
pretation of the character of the MerChant of Venice. Not an answer,
perhaps, but a supplementary explanation of Shylock's background
and motives. In the Ibn-Zahav version as presented by Schwartz,
Shylock emerges as a tragic figure with contemporary connotations—
reduced to desp‘air by the willfulness of his enemies, crazed by perse-
cution, he is driven to vengeance but recants when the opportunity
for vengeance, s granted. Shylock's motives are those of Palestine's
dissidents, but his refusal finally to exact vengeance is in the great
tradition of Jewish morality as .exemplified by the tenacious, heroic
forbearance of the organized Yishitv. Schwartz's dramatization of the •
Ibn Zahav's novel, besides rectifying a historic injustice committed
against the Jew by the greatest genius in British letters, has a stirring.
message for the contemporary Jew.
Detroit Note
Marguerite Kozenn, soprano, and Julius Chajes, composer-pian-
ist, both of Detroit, Michigan, just returned from a very successful
European concert tour. They broadcasted three times in Vienna,
where they also performed -in a concert for the Jewish DPs, who are
stationed in the Rcithschild Hospital. Miss Kozenn made history. in
Prague, when she sang the title role Dvorak's "Rusalka" in the. Na-
tional Theatre in English. The Czechs, who have a genuine love for
Americans, called Miss Kozenn 31 times before the curtain. Chajes
and Miss Kozenn have been re-engaged to tour Europe next spring.
