Poll Shows 52% in. U. S.
Have Bias Against Jews

NEW YORK (JTA)—Half - the
American people have a bias
against some one of the minori-
ties that make up the population,
and more of this prejudice is di-
rected against Jews than against
any other minority, according to
a Fortune Magazine survey ap-
pearing in the October issue.
. "Seventy-three per cent of
those who had any hostility to
express along economic lines and
52 per cent of those who had hos-.
tility to expreSs along political
lines picked on Jews," the ar-
ticle points out, adding that the
answers "confirm the thought
that Jews evoke the greatest hos-
tility in the areas where there
are very few of them." Accord-
ing to the poll, 36 per cent of the
population listed their resentment
of Jewish economic power.

Hungary Said
To Deprive Jews
Of Land Benefits

BUDAPEST (JTA) — Fascist-
minded officials are interpreting
the Hungarian land reform law—
which is aimed at breaking up
large estates and giving land to
the peasantry—in a manner pre-
judicial to Jews, Uj Elet, the or-
gan of the Jewish community,
charges.
The weekly reports the case of
a Jewish boy named Gyoergy
Loewy, .who has been stripped of
a small tract of land owned by
his family under the new law.
The boy's parents and all of his
close relatives were murdered by
fascists. The newspaper points
out -that former fascists are al-
loWed to retain land.

South African
Fascists Attack
And Beat Zionists

JOHANNESBURG, South Afri-
ca (JTA)—A Jew was severely
beaten here when a gang' of na-
tionalist pro-Nazis attempted to
break up a Communist meeting
and later attacked a Zionist par-
ley. Several others were also
hurt.
The pro-fascists marched to a
hall where Zionists were meeting
and waited outside to attack the
jews as they left. After a short
battle the nationalists fled, but a
Jew who was pursuing them was
halted by police. A number of
isolated attacks on Jewish youths
have taken place in the suburbs
recently.

and on farms about the extent of
Jewish political power. Overall,
21 per cent feel that Jews have
-too much of a voice in the govern-
ment. This figue is followed by
the 15 per cent who resent the
role* of the Catholics in American
political life.
Some 28 per cent — approxi-
mately 22 million Americans—
said they believed 'that certain
racial and religious groups in
this country "are treated very
badly, and some strong measures
should be taken to improve the
situation."

Arab Land Safe
In Jewish, State,
Granovsky Says

A '2x4 SAROUK notable
for its intricate floral de-
signs and its close. hard
weave. Ideal with natu-
ral-color carpet back-
ground. -

JERUSALEM, (JTA) _=Estab-
lishment of a Jewish state in
Palestine will not result in re-
quisition of land belonging to
its Arab citizens, Dr. Abraham
Granovsky, managing director of
the Jewish National Fund, de-
clared here at a ceremony com-
memorating the sixth apnivers-
ary of the death of Menachem
Mendel Ussishkin, noted Zionist
leader. •
The first move of the Jewish
authorities would be to improve
the lot of the agricultural work-'
ers by improving the yield of the
land through such projects as
water resources development. Im-
proving the yield of the land
would make it unnecessary for a
landowner to possess as much
land as now in order to support
his family and would eventually
lead him to sell his excess land,
upon which newly-arrived Jew-
ish immigrants would be settled,
Granovsky asserted.
He reported that 29 settlements
were established on JNF land
during the past year .and that
some 16,000 acres were purchased
by the organization. Approxi-
mately $18,000,000 were con-
tributed from America, Britain,
Latin America and elsewhere
during the year, but at the same
time the JNF invested $24,000,-
000.. Goldie Meirson, Jewish
Agency political chief, and Tel
Aviv Mayor Israel Rokach, who
was recently released from de-
tention, also spoke.
