Aldale Maane

Quite a war of nerves going on at Lake Success these days. The
Arabs have learned some propaganda tricks since last April, they
threaten, cajole, - spread false rumors of alleged American support
for their case while, in private conversation, in Arabic, they are
overheard voicing doubts about their success. The U. S. government
is fence straddling—yes, but it is in the interests of the Arabs to
create the impression that the United States has actually jettisoned
the Jews. By means of this false information, the Arabs hope to
ensnare into their camp some of the Latin Americans. As Washington
goes, so will most of the Latin Americans and some Europeans, and
should the Arabs succeed in impressing • on the delegations. that the
U. S. is with them, then other delegations also may come along with
the Arabs. This is a trick the Mufti's gang has used to great advan-
tage in Palestine. Riots were started by spreading the word amongst
the. Arab masses that "Aldale Maane, . the government. is With us.
Now they are spreading the same slogan regarding the U. S. It is up
to Secretary Marshall to stop it by forthright action in the tradition
of U. S. policy.

The report that Lion Feuchtwanger is returning to Germany Christian faith to study the na-,
will be a shock to many. Feuchtwanger, one of the most brilliant lure and institutions of the Jew-
historical novelists of our age, author of several excellent novels from
JeWish history—Jew Suss, Josephus—has specialized in portraying
Jews torn between two worlds, between pride in their own and the
wish to merge with the alien world. He has been the great disector
of half-way assimilationists, of the Jew successful in the world, yet
unable to break away from the moorings. To some extent he has been
an apologist for and defender of this type of Jew. His reported
decision to return to bloody Germany explains why Feuchtwanger
understood so well the Jew obsessed with assimilation. For only an
obsession can be at the root of his return-to-Germany decision.
Howard Fast's new novel, Clarkton, is being translated into
eleven languages. His play, The Children, is in production on Broad-
way, and two of his stories are "in the process" in Hollywood. Then,
of course, there is a jail sentence hanging over his head—for con-
tempt of the Rankin Committee.

Disturbed

The Zion-foes of the State Department are disturbed by the
fact that for once Jewry is truly united in behalf of the UNSCOP
majority report. They had hoped for some disunity, and instead
were met by a formidable front of Achdut Yisroel—Jewish Agency,
Agudas Israel, World Jewish Congress, American Jewish Conference,
American Jewish Committee. The
Council of Judaism cannot be .
used as subterfuge, for it is known for what it is. Speak of Jewish
unity=for Once it carries -some weight down at Lake Success. It
carries sufficient weight for State Departmenters to try to poo-poo
it by contending
that Jewry is not truly united, that this is a
pretense,
etc.
