Resolutions Expressing Sorrow of Zionist Organization
Presented at Memorial Meeting to Mesdames
Isaac and Simon Shetzer

Simon Shetzer .Memorial-Ed-
ucatiorial Institute will be esta-
blished here by the Zionist Or-
ganization of Detroit in tribute
to the late Zionist leader.
Announcement of plans for this
memorial tribute was made at
the meeting in honor of Mr. Shet-
zer, at the Shaatey Zedek, on
Sept. 25.
This Institute will commence
in January, it . was indicated by
the Zionist Organization of De-
"' troit, sponsor of the project.
The audience of nearly 800 who
attended the memorial meeting
stood in tribute to Mr. Shetzer
and in "approval of a 'resolution
which was drafted by the De-
troit Zionists. " ,
Copies of the -'resolution;
printed on parchment, were
presented to Mrs. Simon (Glo-.
ria) Shetzer andlO the mother
of the deceased,: Mrs. Isaac
Shetzer, as a mark, of apprecia-
tion of the encouragement the
wife and the mother of the late
ZiOnist leader gave him in his
work in behalf of Palestine's
redemption.
Dr. James G. Heller Of 'Cincin-
nati, one of the outstanding Zion-
ist leaders in the country, in the
principal address of the evening,
- declared that the greatest organ-
ization successes in American
Zionist history were attained dur,
ing the two years when Simon

Aaron Droock spoke in behalf
of the Jewish Community Coun-
cil Julian H. Krolik for the Jew-
ish Welfare Federation and Rabbi
Morris Adler for Congregation
Shaarey Zedek. .Other sponsor-
ing organizations were the United
Hebrew; Schools, under the lead-
ership of the Zionist Organization
of Detroit, .Hadassah, Detroit
Round Table of Christians and
Jew's and Phi Sigma Delta Fra-
ternity.
Morris Jacobs, local Zionist
president, read the resolution.
The meeting was opened by Phil-
ip Slomovitz, chairman of the
committee on arrangements,. who
outlined the evening program.
The El Molei Rachamim was
chanted by. Cantor J. H. Sonen-
klar.
Practically all leaders in all
walks of life in Detroit Jewry at-
tended the memorial meeting.
Miss Elizabeth .Ruth - Shetzer, Si-
mon Shetzet'S surviving daugh-
ter, came from Ann Arbor where
she is a student at the University
of Michigan to attend the meet-
ing.-
. Speakers at the memorial meet-
ing also Paid tribute to the mem-
ory of Simon Shetzer's father; the
late Isaac Shetzer who was one
'of 'Detroit Jewry's Outstanding
leaders.

Mr. Ell mann,
former president
of • the Jewish
Community
Council and past
president of the
Zionist Organ-
ization, of De-
troit, is well J. Ellmann
known for his service to the .De-
troit Jewish community.
Due to the increased interest
in Zionism, it is expected that
this year's ball will be most
successful since its inception
fifteen years ago, Ellmann- states
in inviting the cooperation of all
Detroit Zionists.
Proceeds of this ball are used
to defray expenses of the local
Zionist Organization.

First Palestine-Made
Film Runs in New York

"House in the Desert," the first
film of 'Palestine's first and only
motion picture company, began a
six-week run at the Museum of
Science and Industry in New
York.-
Presented by the United Pales-
tine - Appeal in conjunction with
the Palestine exhibit at the mu-
seum, "House in the Desert" is
part of a speCial film program on
Palestine and will be shown with
the documentary "Assignment:
Tel Aviv" narrated by . Quentin
Reynolds.

To Start Oct. 14

The Red Feather has been
adopted by Community Chests
- throughout the country as a sym-
bol of service. The Red Feather
will solicit everyone's help from
Oct. 15 to Nov. 12 to raise the
$5,350,000 which will - be - needed
during 1948 to carry on the serv-
ices of the 125 Community Chest
agencies. .
United under the Red Feather
symbol in Detroit are • 125 agen-
cies which provide family service,
care of the sick, child care, ju-
venile guidance and youth :serv-
ice.

strumental in assisting the finan-
cing of agricultural cooperatives.
The Palestine Water Co„ Ltd., a
AP:E.C. .subSidiary, has also made
a contribution to Palestine agri-
culture by locating new sources
.of water and by establishing the
Californian system of district
irrigation companies.
• l3ayside Land Corp., Ltd., an:-
other P.E.C.'sUbsidiary, has play-
ed a part in the purchase of the
Haifa Bay area, where most of
Palestine's heavy industries are
located.
Other activities of the P.E.C.
include participation in some of
the country's largest enterprises:
Palestine Potash Ltd.; Palestine
Electric Corp.; Agricultural Mort-
gage' Cp.; Palestine Hotels Ltd.;
Fertilizers. & Chemicals Ltd. - The
company has shown a profit of
approximately $246,000 in 1946."

Initial Fund Totals $1,200, Grants To'
Supervision of Welfare Federation And Phi
Delta Epsilon Fraternity

Establishment by Mr. and Mrs.
Lee Weinberg of the "Lee and
Ella Weinberg: Scholarship Fund",
for mediaal school expenses of
senior and -junior medical stu-
dents, has been'announced by the
Jewish Welfare Federation.
According to the terms of the
grant, the beneficiaries- are to be
selected by a committee consist=
ing of five members; three :ap-
pointed by the board of gover-
nors of the Detroit Jewish -.Wel-
fare Federation, and the remain-
ing two, by the Detroit Graduate
Club of Phi Delta Epsilon Frater-
nity.
Representing the Federation
will be Julian H. Krolik, presi-
dent; Mrs. Benjamin - E. Jaffe
and Dr. Harry C. Saltzstein; the
Fraternity, Dr. Harry E. August
and Dr. Theodore I. Bergman.
The ,students selected are to
come from- the Detroit metro-
politan area, and are to receive
assistance in annual amounts not
to exceed $600.
While financial need will be
taken into account, the commit
tee will • also be guided by the
scholastic record. Prior claim
will be held by junior and sen-
ior medical students..
The donors have expressed the
belief that since student sub,
si ies are to be preferred on a
loan rather than a gift basis; the
loan policy to be followed may
make it pbSsible for student bene-
ficiaries of one :ye\ar to help pro=

vide, - through repayment for like
subsidies to be granted to. their
successors in medical school.
The fund was initiated with a
grant of $1,200, and it is the hope

ture trade relations between Bul-
garia and Palestine was ex-
pressed by several cabinet min-
isters who received a Palestine
trade delegation this week, it
was reported here. --
Meanwhile, the Palestine pavil-
ion at the international fair at
PloclViv closed after having been
'visited by some 345,000 Bulgar-
ians and 5,000 visitors from other
, countries. The exhibit was gen-
erally considefed one of the best
at the fair.
