UN Girding
To Tackle Task
of Palestine

(Continued from Page 3)
the Special Committee on Pales-
tine; that Zionists used .threats
of violence to prevent 30,000 Jews
from leaving Palestine; that some
of these Jews were "believed to
have been murdered." He repeat-
ed the British charge that chit:
_then . were . "forced" to make the
trip on the Exodus. "For these
,reasons," he said, "the United Na-
tions should not be hurried into
a decision, and all members
should keep an open mind and
not commit themselves in advance
but wait until all the facts have
been laid before them in the first
committee."
As-Said's vituperative remarks
might have made the major head-
lines were it not for the fact that
Vyshinski had stolen all thunder.
Opinions Vary Greatly
Differences of opinion on the
prOspects for adoption of the ma-
jority UNSCOP report are as
varied as the gulf between Jews
and Arabs at the UN. Dr. Oswal-
do Aranha, president of the As-
sembly, for instance, assured
Miss Beatrice, Heiman of-JTA that
the report has an excellent
chance of adoption. At the same
time, Yugoslavia's Sava Kasano-
vich told J. L. Teller of Palcor
that his country's support of the
minority report is not the final
word in the matter; that it is only
a tentative proposal based on his
country's experiences with na-
tional and religious minorities
(there is a large Moslem popu-
lation in Yugoslavia); that his
country's position remains fluid
but that the -Jewish position will
be considered seriously and sym-
pathetically.
On the other hand, many be-
lieve that it will be difficult to
muster a two-third majority for
the UNSCOP report and that a
compromise is imminent.
Simultaneous Translations
Meanwhile things are made
much easier for correspondents
who are relieved of the tension
of listening to- many speeches in
many languages, with interpre-
tations in the two official UN.
tongues— English and French.
The "walkie - talkie" portable
,radio sets provided for delegates,
correspondents and a limited
number of spectators are used for
simultaneous translation&
There are 700 accredited cor-
respondents ;— 420 representing
126 U. S. newspapers and 280
representing 185 non-American
papers and press associations, be-
sides 70 radio commentators and
140 newsreel and television men.
The Jewiih press and news agen-,
cies are wells represented.

Present Form
ARTICLE IV—Officers and Manage-
. ment

sociation shall be carried on by a

two (42) elected directors, and all

eration. Of the elected directors, four-
teen • (14) shall be elected annually

Kalamazoo Sets
$64,000 UJA Goal

KALAMAZOO — Inspired by
the address of Detroit's Milton
K. Mahler, residents of Kalama-
zoo set a campaign goal of $64,000
at the opening dinner of their
United Jewish appeal drive last
week.
. Mahler, a member of the Board
of Governors • of the Detroit
Jewish - Welfare Federation and
co-chairman of the mechanical
trades division of the Detroit
Service Group in the 1947 Allied
JeWish Campaign, was the main
speaker at' the meeting.
. Judging by the encouraging re-
sponse to the opening meeting;
Kalamazoo leaders were confi-
dent that the goal would be
achieved.
. Morris Handelsman is chair-
man of the campaign. He is as-
sisted by Milton Orwin and Julius
Eisenberg.
