P
BOBBY SHAN, the swell en-
tertainer from hereabouts is back
in town after wowing the folks at
a northern resort this summer
• . . and is appearing at the Club
Stevadore. . . . His perfection in
mimicking screen and radio stars,
plus a laugh-getting line of chat-
ter, puts him on a fast elevator
toward the top in show business.

HERE'S GOOD NEWS for ter-
psi lovers . . . More sessions of
Holiday Hops begin at the Jew-
ish Center . . . Oct. 12 . .. with
Paul LaVoie, the WJR music
maestro, tabbed for opening night
rhythms . . . It'll be season num-
ber six for Holiday Hops, which
was the first series of dances in
the community to adopt a "local
name band" policy for all its
affairs.

JEWISH EDUCATION MONTH
. . : which ends Oct. 7 . . . is
aimed primarily at getting mom-
ma and poppa to send the young
tuns out for some learning about
our people . . . As a follow-up of
strenuous reminder, Jewish Edu-
cation Week starts the day after
the °tiller closes . . . Oct. kto 15.

MASADA and JR. HADASSAH
are set for a term of coopera-
tive detail . . . Everyone is invit-
ed to their first affair . . . A Tea

Shaarey Zedek the site .. . Al-
though "two separate organiza-
tions" the group will meet to-
gether and take turns at swing-
ing the gavel . . . Presidents 'Dr.
Sam Krohn and Dorothea Bond
look for a lot of activity, this
year .. . with a big dance prob-
ably being tossed in addition
to another "Night in Tel Aviv"
• . . They'll work together on
everything . . • except, no doubt,
Hadassah's annual Mother and
Daughter Banquet . . . unless
the boys are figuring on donnin;
feminine garb for the occasion.

HARRY THOMAS, the suit
and coat man, has one less strand
of hair on his head . . all he
can afford . . . after missing the
bowler's dream of a 300 score by
one "*&'x'*&!" pin . . . `Twas
last week in a match with Dr.
Mike Engelman and Max Rosner
against Harry Kordner, Ruby
Sampson, and Sam Pincus . .
Harry says he pocketed every
ball including the last one but
that "*&'x''*&*!" ten pin would-
n't fall . . . Would have been
a treat to take to the little wo-
man, who continually asks him
why he can't roll a perfect game.

*
DISA 'N DATA . . . Hershel
Levine came to town just long
enough to observe the holidays
and say goodbye to so many folks
who are going to miss him . . .
The popular youth leader is now
a California business man . . .
The kids of BBYO really went
all out on publicizing their suc-
cessful Yom Kippur Dance . . .
Dexter Blvd. traffic gave way
to a gala parade . . . Cop on
motorcycle did all he could do
to direct the gas buggies one way
or the other . . . Bill Goll and
Shirley Dubrinsky showed what
ingenuity can do by talking in
front of Shaarey Zedek, deciding
to toss a party at her home that
evening and then throwing one
better than half of those given
after long term planning . • .
Gals of Naomi Auxiliary of
BBYW ask us (and everyone
else) to let the fellows know
about a social shindig they're
holding, Sept. 30, at Evelyn Weis-
berg's home, 1624 Glynn Ct. . . .
Hope there's enough room.
* * *
CHILDREN'S DEPT. . . . It was
dinner time and Mrs. Herman
Garelick had become peeved at
the way little Gary was reach-
ing across the table everytime
he wanted something . . . Fin-
ally, in an irate tsimae.
-
she said,
"Gary! Stop reaching for things!
Haven't you got a tongue?" .. .
Looking up, the youngster re-
plied, "Yes, mother, but my arm
is much longer."
IT'S TIME AGAIN for the
tape measure . . . so get it out
and see if you've stretched any
. . . because the Tall Towers
group opens its fall season of fun
for six-footers . • . First affair
will be a cocktail party at home
of Jerry (5'8") Hamburg, 3000
Webb . . . Oct. 5, 4-6 p. m. . . .
with big fun in store for biggies
. . . If you're a guy, ya' gotta hit
the six mark . . . If's you're a gal,
then just 5'7" is okay.

Annual Drive
The spirit of brotherhood that is
evidenced in Detroit's Northwest
section, with a Jewish synagogue
and a Congregational church situ- .
ated just a few yards apart on
Curtis, was clearly brought out
on Rosh Hashanah.
Rev. Robert Burtt of the May-
flower . Congregational Church,
and two members of the ladies
auxiliary of the church, personal-
ly- delivered three baskets of
white flowers to Rabbi Jacob E.
Segal, to adorn the pulpit of the
Northwest Hebrew Congregation.
In addition, the church, bulletin
board carried a New Year greet-
ing to its Jewish neighbors dur-
ing the holiday week.
Chicago Leader Speaks
To Northwest Sisterhood
At a meeting at Shaarey Zedek
Sept. 18 under the chairmanship
of Rabbi Joshua S. Sperka, head
of the Detroit chapter, the League
for Religious Labor in Palestine,
launched its annual drive for
support of pioners in the home-
land.
Rabbi M. Peretsky, League
field director, who will spend sev-
eral months in Detroit, convened
the meeting. Dr. A. M. Hersh-
man is honorary chairman of the
local group, Charles Wolok, treas-
urer and Max Chomsky, secre-
tary.
Reporting on personal observa-
tions during his tour of Eretz
Israel last fall, Rabbi M. J. Wohi-
gelernter, chairman of the Leag-
ue's national council, told of the
significant role played by the re-
ligious halutzim in both the ur-
ban and agricultural sectors of
the Yishuv. He referred particu-
larly to the Elitzur sport organi-
zation which is supported by the
League and has a membership of
more than 7,000; of the various
cooperatives organized for new
immigrants, of the need for ad-
ditional housing particularly for
young women entering the port
of Haifa.
Appealing to organizations and
individuals for a renewal of their
contributions-to the League, Rab-
bi Sperka stated "now that a
UN decision on Palestine is in
the offing and hopes strengthened
for , the solution of our problem
we must extend" a helping hand
to the - builders of Palestine in
the spirit of Torah and tradition."
