THE JEWISH NEWS
10,000 Without Jewish Instruction!
Education Month's Goal:
Dignity for Our Children
A Proclamation to Detroit Jewry
More than 15,000 Jewish children have returned to
their classes in the public elementary and high schools
of Detroit. Less than one-third of this number are now
enrolled in the local Jewish schools.
This means that approximately 10,000 of our boys
and girls are not receiving any Jewish education at the
present time. This vast number of tomorrow's citizens
in the Jewish community will be ignorant of our Torah,
our history and our Jewish aspirations. They are without
directed guidance for their lives as Jews in the American
environment.
With the destruction of the reservoir of Judaism in
European lands, of the great institutions of learning and
of the concentrated masses of our people who lived a
meaningful life as Jews, Jewish education in America
has become a matter of crucial significance for the very
existence of our people. The tragedy of the remnant of
Israel across the sea and the heroic struggle for their
rehabilitation, and the epic story of the upbuilding of
Eretz Israel, have been focused on the world's attention.
Our own children rightfully demand that basic knowl-
edge which alone can give meaning to the dramatic
events of our day.
The month of Tishri with its soul-searching days of
solemnity and its joyous festivals, replete with asso-
ciations, has been proclaimed throughout the Jewish
communities of this country as Education Month. During
this period each of us should meet the problem of his
child's Jewish education.

ed Hebrew Schools.

agogue committee, report that an
encouraging reception is being
given during the Holy Days to
spokesmen for the schools by De-
troit's congregations.
The Hebrew Teachers Organ-
ization of the United Hebrew
Schools, headed by Joseph H.
Haggai, have completed plans
for a luncheon and a symposium
on Jewish education, to be held
Sunday, Oct. 12, at 12:30 p.m.,
in the auditorium of the Rose
Sittig Cohen Building. Tickets
for this luncheon are obtainable
at the offices of all bran, hes of
the United Hebrew Schools.
Other affiliated organizations
that are planning special projects
during Education Month include
the Woman's Auxiliary, Kvutzah
Ivrith and its Ladies Auxiliary.
The radio committee headed by
A. J. Lachover has made contacts
with Mrs. Hyman Altman, spon-
sor of the WJLB programs, and
Harry Weinberg, sponsor of the
WJBK program, and arrange-
ments have been made for a se-
ries of brief talks. Bernard Isaacs
delivered the opening Education
Month address on Saturday even-
ing, Sept. 13, over Station WJLB.
The American Jewish Congress,
winding up its campaign to ob-
tain signatures required to re-
peal the Callahan Act, announces
an enthusiastic response to its
call for petitioners.
Although the Attorney General
of the State of Michigan has
stated that no funds are avail-
able to carry out provisions of
the Callahan Act, the Detroit
section of the American Jewish
Congress issued a warning that
this statement should not inter-
fere with the collection of signa-
tures.
"The time to halt and defeat
Fascism at home," said Harry
Nathan, president of the Detroit
section, American Jewish Con-
gress, "is *hen it shows its first
manifestations. As the Germans
found, it is too late when Fas-
cism is already in power."
The petition campaign is aimed
at wiping from the Michigan
statute books the law which
would label as "foreign agencies"
all persons or organizations hav-
ing any international connec-
tions. The Callahan Act is so
worded as to challenge the pur-
pose and integrity of such world-
wide groups as the Red Cross,
Zionist Organizations and the
Catholic Church.

Special Program for Children
2955 Richton Ave. TO. 6-7094
The Jewish community of Detroit offers a variety
of educational programs for your children. Schools are
located in several neighborhoods and are open for the
enrollment of new students during the entire _month.
For the sake of your children's well-being and happiness
act immediately.
Alert parents are initiating their children into a
Jewish educational program at the time that they are
ready for admission into the public schools. Continuous
and unbroken attendance throughout the elementary
and high school age gives the student an opportunity to
come into his full Jewish heritage. During these forma-
tive years when the character of your children is molded,
they should grow up to be intelligent about their Jewish-
ness and to face the world with dignity and with a sense
of inner security.
