Exodus DPs Pledge to Foil
4ttempts to Separate Them
POPPENDORF CAMP, Ger-
many (JTA)—The 4,400 Exodus
refugees confined in this camp
and at nearby Am Stau voiced
their determination to defy any
British efforts to separate them.
At a mass meeting at Am Stau,
more than 1,400 refugees pledged
themselves to stay together until
they reach Palestine.
All of them were agreed that
the British will attempt to break
them up into small groups, and
by distributing them to various
camps, free themselves of any
financial responsibilities, at the
same • time demoralizing the
refugees.

AJC Urges U. S. to Back
UNSCOP Majority Plan
In a telegram to Secretary of
State Marshall, signed by Joseph
M. Proskauer, president of the
American Jewish Committee, and
Jacob Blaustein, Baltimore, chair-
man of the executive committee,
the committee urged that the
U. S. government "vigorously
and speedily" epdorse the major-
ity report of the United Nations
Special Committee on Palestine.
The committee, which says in
the telegram that it has "never
been a part of the Zionist move-
ment but has always been deeply
concerned with the development
of Jewish settlement in Palestine,"
expressed its confidence that the
American people will back the
government in supporting the ma-
jority plan.

French Renew Offer
To Exodus Refugees
—International Sound Photo
PARIS (JTA)—The French
government has renewed its offer
of hospitality to the Exodus refu-
gees, a representative of the
French Foreign Office announced
at a press conference.
He revealed the conditions
which France had proposed to the
British to govern the admission
of the refugees. The British
would have to furnish names and
particulars of the volunteers.
After that, the French would is-
sue collective entry visas for
temporary residence to all Exo-
dus Jews who volunteered.
Although the Foreign Office
representative said -that the Jews
would be granted regular visas
rather than transit papers, he
added that the number of Exodus
immigrants who entered would
be subtracted from the total num-
ber of DPs who are permitted to
enter France en route to other
countries.

If YOU Were a British-Made DP of the Exodus!
No one has yet adequately described the tragic meaning of the
term DP. To be a displaced person means to be without a home,
without security, without peace of mind. It means being . dependent
upon the goodness of heart of people overseas for food, clothing and
sustenance. It implies the status of a person who, having survived the
horrors or Nazism, must continue to live in guarded camps, at the
mercy of police many of whom are either German or Polish, or,
when the guards are American or British soldiers, are youngsters
who are bitter over their own fate of serving in a foreign land.
We have a new type of DP: the British-made category of
displaced persons who, having been barred from the place
they have chosen as their homeland, have been returned to the
status of living on accursed German soil whence came the most
brutal policies of extermination ever pronounced upon an
entire people.
This, briefly, is the tragedy of Poppendorf Camp near Lubeck,
Germany. The pleadings of Christians and Jews, of the United States
Government and of responsible leaders of many Christian communi-
ties, fell on deaf ears, and the British labor cabinet saw fit to approve
a brutal policy promulgated by Ernest Bevin.
British authorities are not satisfied with their cruel ruling. They
have also undertaken a screening of the forcibly deported DPs with
the purported intention of having them returned to the countries of
their origin.
Suppose WE were these British-made DPs of the Exodus
fame? Would WE undertake a hunger strike, as they had, in
order to show contempt for those who make a gesture of
feeding us after degrading us? Would WE consent to being
sent back to Poland which has become a mass graveyard of our
people? Would WE consent to a perpetuation of a status of
dishonor and humiliation?
Your Commentator assumes to say that we would act exactly as
the Exodus deportees had and that we would fight to a finish for our
honor and our rights as human beings.
And if this is the verdict of all libertarians and humanitarians,
then we must throw in our lot with all who are searching for a home,
for a return to an honorable existence and for security in the only
land Jews without a home can possibly hope to call HOMELAND.
"I've Seen This . . . Under Hiller"
Maurice Pearlman, JPS and PM correspondent, in a cable from
Hamburg, quoted a British officer, who asked that no mention be
made of his rank and regiment, as saying, in comment on his experi-
ence at Hamburg, in the process of the Exodus-Jews' "Disembarka-
tion, "Today I am ashamed of my uniform."
A Dutch correspondent told Pearlman at Hamburg: "I can't
stand this. I've seen five years of this in Holland under Hitler."
Pearlman cables that a Danish journalist "said almost hysteri-
cally": "I didn't expect to see this again after the war, especially by.
the British against the Jews on German soil."
It is no wonder that Winchell and others were inclined to sub-
stitute the letter u for the first i in the word British.

Outwitting the British
British intelligence officers were out-smarted in their screening
process at Poppendorf. When asked for their place of birth or origin,
the Exodus deportees replied: PALESTINE!
It proves that the British attempt to discourage the refugees is
failing.
The survivors from Nazism have one objective: PALESTINE. It
would be tragic if we were to lose faith completely and were to
believe that the hopes of the refugees will be completely destroyed.
Somehow, we have confidence that British tactics will fail—and that
Jewish aspirations therefore will triumph.

Jewish majority.
"Both the Balfour Declaration
and the Mandate involved inter- _
national commitments to the
Jewish people as a whole. "It was
obvious they were not limited
only to the Jewish population of
Palestine, since at the time there
were only some 80,000 Jews here.
"This would imply," the report
points out, "that all Jews in the
world who wish to go to Pales-
tine would have the right to do
so. This view, however, would
seem to be unrealistic in the
sense that a country as small and
poor as Palestine could never ac-
commodate all the Jews in the
world.

policy which the State Department is now shaping with regard to
Palestine will be considerably influenced by the attitude of the Navy
because Palestine is a very strategic point in the Mediterranean, in
which the U. S. Navy is now taking a direct interest.
