Palestinian Doctors Prepare in U. S.
Un-Americanism in Our Schools For Duties at Hebrew U. Med School

EDITORIAL

There is justification for the sense of outrage that is
being expressed by many scores of people—non-Jews as well
as Jews—over the incident reported in the Free Press last
Friday in connection with the injuries suffered by two
children as a result of falling plaster in a kindergarten class-
room of the Winterhalter School, located at 12121 Broadstreet.
Instead of aspiring to complete safety for the children
and of facing an issue squarely and fairly, the school prin-
cipal, Miss Evelyn Booth, told the Free Press that the affair
is none of its business; that the class became hysterical; that
she did not even let the other teachers in the school know
anything about the occurrence; that the story should not be
published and that—

HAPPY

izing in cancer research who studied at Mayo Institute and who is
now at N. Y. Skin and Cancer Hospital; Dr. Fritz Dreyfuss, heart
specialist. who has been working at Montefiore Hospital, N. Y.: Dr.
Walter Kornblueth, who is a fellow in residence at the Wilmer Oph-
thalmological Institute at Johns Hopkins University and Hospital,
doing research in corneal surgery. (Seated, 1. to r.) Dr. Aaron Beller,
neurosurgeon, who has been studying at the Jewish Hospital of
Brooklyn and the University of Pennsylvania; Dr. E. M. Bluestone.
director of the Montefiore Hospital, New York, who as chairman of
the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Reference Board, super-
vised the placement and work of the young Palestinian doctors; and
Dr. Abraham Hachman, concerned with cancer research and radi-
ology, who has been studying at Cornell University. Dr. Andre de
Vries (not shown here), internal medcine specialist, is doing research
at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston.

Her subsequent denial of her statement in
no sense assuages the hurt feelings of the com-
munity in which she serves. It only proves the
value of publicity which compels people to act
properly.

We have no way of knowing whether the two injured
children are Jewish. Miss Booth stated that "only two children
were scratched and one little girl frightened."
We do know, however, that a large percentage of the
people in the vicinity of the Winterhalter School are Jewish,
and there is no reason for dismissing as unjustified the sus-
picion of 'many people that those whom she attacked as
hysterical and emotional were meant to be the Jews.

Miss Booth, who assumed to judge emotion-
alism, is too unreasonably emotional to be worthy
of the trust of supervising a school attended by
thousands of children. She failed to apply calm-
ness in time of crisis. Her first impulse was to
pour insults upon the children and parents of her
community. The Board of Education owes it to
the people of petroit to act firmly in this incident
and to give assurance that people who can not
exercise self-control have no right to positions of
responsibility in our school system.
