Closeup of Frank Goldman

Bnai Brith's New President
To Follow Monsky's Path

By MURRAY FRANK

"I never pt.shed myself and I
never looked for personal honor
rn Bnai Brith," Frank Goldman
said to me when I congratulated
him upon his election to the
presidency of Bnai Brith.
-The Bnai Brith, with its 1300
men's 1(.dges and women's -:hapt-
ers throughout the country and
a membership of,
over 300,000 is
today the largest
Jewish service
organization in
the U. S. and in
the world. Its
growth during
the last decade,
is to a very t,
large extent duev
to the efforts of 1•.
the late and un-
forgettabl .e Hen L
F. Goldman
ry Monsky.
Goldman praises Monsky for
his accomplishments as "a truly
great roan who possessed some of
the attributes of Abraham'-Lin-
coin." Goldman will attempt to
continue in the footsteps of Mon-
sky.
Both Goldman and Monsky
were born in the same year, 1890,
Monsky in February, Goldman in
December. He was born in Low-
ell. Mass., where he also resides
to this day. After his graduation
from high school. Goldman en-
tered Boston University law
school, and in 1910 received his
LI. B. degree, summa cum laude.
At 21 he passed the Massachus-
etts bar, and shortly thereafter
opened a law office in Lowell.
His wife, a former Boston Jewish
girl named Rose Sydeman, was a
student at Boston University at
the time they decided to get mar-
vied in 1915.

Denmark to Lend Hand
In Stopping 'Illegal' Jews

LAKE SUCCESS (JTA) — Of
three European countries among
10 nations which have replied
to a British request for coopera-

tion in halting illegal immigra-
tion to Palestine, only Denmark
stated unequivocally that it has
taken steps to halt such migra-
tion, the UN Secretariat disclosed.
The Netherlands only acknowl-
edged receipt of the request,
while Yugoslavia said no action
had been taken since there has

been no instance of Palestine-
bound Jews passing through its

territory.
The other nations replying

were Bolivia, Brazil, Cuba, El

British request.

The War Department has turn-
ed thumbs down on "All My
Sons" for production in Germany
and Austria. The play was
originally asked for by the Am-
erican Military Government and
got preliminary approval from
the War Department on the
ground that it was an outstand-
ing drama.
Then protests began to pile up
because the play deals with a
war profiteer and it was describ-
ed as not the kind of thing that
should be shown in enemy coun-
tries. The War Department has
finally reversed itself.

BEST WISHES

Positive Approach to Problems

Goldman has a positive ap-
proach to Jewish life. "The prob-
lem of the displaced persons in
Europe," he states, "the fight for
the removal of the British White
Paper and the struggle for the
admission of 100,000 Jewish sur-
vivors into Palestine, are very
close to my heart. I intend to do
everything I can toward the solu-
tion of these problems."
Shortly after his election, he

came to Washington to testify be-
fore a Senate committee which
was considering a bill to estab-
lish a permanent Fair Employ-
ment Practices Committee to
abolish .discrimination in the em-
ployment of minority groups.
"The need for Congress to
enact such legislation," said Gold-
man, "is two-fold, economic and
