Rabbi - Steinberg Writes Clear
Description of Judaism

RABBI MILTON STEINBERG

An interpretive, descriptive, and non-partisan account of "the
historic Jewish faith" has been written by Rabbi Milton Steinberg
of the Park Avenue Synagogue, New York, and is being published
by Harcourt, Brace and Co. Titled "Basic Judaism," Rabbi Steinberg's .
newest book is addressed particularly to three groups of people:
believing Jews; Sews who have been indifferent but who are now
groping to establish rapport with.
the Jewish tradition, and "those
many non-Jews who are curious
about Judaism."
Rabbi Steinberg, who is also
the author of "A Partisan Guide
to the Jewish Problem," "As A
Driven Leaf," and "The Making
of the Modern Jew," explains in
his preface to "Basic Judaism"
that it is a book about the Jewish
religion. It is not about Jews,
or Jewish problems, or Jewish
culture, or Zionism, "but about
those beliefs, ideals, and practices
which make up the historic Jew-
ish faith."
Striving for objectivity and
suppressing his private view-
point, Rabbi Steinberg seeks in
"Basic Judaism" to depict the

Jewish religion "as it is." Where
Jews differ in their construc- ceremony, a body of law, a sacred
tion of it, the author has given literature, institutions through
which the foregoing find expres-
each group a fair hearing.

Former Nazi :Generals
Hold High Positions
Under Soviets Now

NEW YORK, (JPS) — Jonah
Haberman, cabling to the Jewish
Morning Journal from Berlin,
alleges Nazi generals who or-
dered the mass extermination of
Jews in Eastern Europe now oc-
cupy high positions under the
Soviets.
Field Marshall Von Paulus,
Gen. Seidlitz and 49 generals and
300 officers of lower rank, who
ordered Reichswehr pogroms in
the Baltic countries, and in Po-
land, White Russia and the
Ukraine, have been engaged as
military instructors by the Red
Army.
Other pogromists and exterm-
inators of the Jewish people have
been repatriated and appointed
to high administrative posts in
the Soviet zone of occupation.
These include General Marc
Graf, now police chief in the
Soviet zone of Berlin; Gen. Wal-
ter Bechler, whose army killed
42,000 Berdichev Jews, now is
secretary for Domestic Affairs in
the Brandenburg cabinet, and
Gen. Steibel, responsible for the
pogroms in Lemberg in which
60,000 Jews perished, has been
appointed agricultural chief in
the Soviet zone, the correspond-
ent alleges.

Dec. 31 Deadline
Set By Poland For
Property Claims

WARSAW. (JTA) — The Jew-
ish Central Committee estimated
that there are at least 5,000 build-
ings, factories and other real
property in Poland, valued at •
millions of dollars, that can be
legally claimed by Jews residing
abroad, whose families were
wiped out by the Germant. Un-
der existing Polish laws, those
claiming the property of relatives
murdered by the Nazis must
apply no later than Dec. 31, 1947.
After that date, no claims will be
accepted.
Several hundred claims have
been registered with the commit-
tee by Jews in the United States,
Palestine, Australia and South
Africa. However, the Commit-
tee is not in a position to under-
take any action on them, because
the applicants must send in for-
eign currency to cover the cost
of the legal proceedings.
Jewish leaders 'here believe
that the government would react
favorably to a request by Jew-
ish organizations abroad to ex-
tend the deadline for claiming the
property.

Hungary Issues New
Regulations on Property

5708

BUDAPEST, (JTA)—The Min-
istry of Justice has ruled that
persons entrusted by Jews with
their property during the Nazi
occupation and who now refuse
to return the property to the
rightful owners will be tried in
a high court, if the amount in-
volved exceeds $60. Formerly,
all such "eases were brought be-
fore police magistrates, and the
defendants, if found guilty, re-
ceived light prison sentences or
small fines.
