Between You and Me
By BORIS SMOLAR
(Copyright, 1947, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.)
Inside Zionism
Zionist leadership is preparing for a major internal struggle ...
Leaders of the two opposing factions will be David Ben Gurion and
Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, respectively . . . Behind the fight is the issue
of whether the executive of the Jewish Agency should remain a
coalition of all groups, or should be Labor-dominated . . . It must be
remembered that the present executive was not elected by the World
Zionist Congress, but by the Zionist Actions Committee . . . The
Actions Committee can at any time change the composition of the
executive through new elections . . . With an eye on the expected
decision of the United Nations with regard to the status of Palestine,
Ben Gurion is particularly interested in securing a change in the
present coalition executive in which Dr. Silver has great influence
. . . A Labor-dominated executive would, naturally, pave the way
for the establishment of a Labor cabinet should the decision of the
United Nations be favorable to partition, confederation, or any form
of federalization acceptable to the Jews . . . However, the General
Zionists and the Mizrachi are rallying behind Dr. Silver to maintain
the coalition established by the Actions Committee eight months ago.

UN Sentiments
By the time this is read, the United Nations Special Committee
,on Palestine will have its report ready . . . Jewish Agency leaders
are entertaining no illusions as to the recommendations which the
report may contain . . . It is known that UNSCOP is, in its great
majority, not pro-Arab and also not pro-British . • . Hence, the logical
conclusion would have been to expect a recommendation for the
partitioning of Palestine . . . Yet such an outright recommendation
may not be forthcoming . . . This is due to the fact that even the
members who favor partition are very much in doubt as to whether
an Arab State in a part of Palestine can exist economically . . It
would seem logical then to attach such a state either to Transjordan,
or to Syria .. • The conflicting interests of the Arab nations do not
permit such a move . . . Thus, the solution of the Palestine problem
is not hampered by the question of how to establish a "viable"
Jewish State, but rather, how to establish a viable Arab State . . .
Jewish Agency representatives in the United States will be interested
to learn that a certain Isa Nakhleh is disseminating literature in
Washington against the Agency . . . Claiming that he speaks for the
"delegation of the Arab Higher Committee for Palestine." he threat-
ens that "the Arabs will never flinch from fighting the Zionists or
any other power in defense of Palestine."
Chicago Temple
Will Celebrate
Its 100th Year
.11
CHICAGO (JTA)—The K.A.M.
Temple—"Kehilath Anshe Maaa-
riv," or Congregation of the Men
of the West—the oldest syna-
gogue in the Northwest, will ob-
serve the 100th anniversary of
its founding beginning next week
with a two-month celebration
which will bring religious lead-
ers from various sections of the
United States to mark the occa-
sion, it was announced here.
This occasion is also the 100th
anniversary celebration of Chi-
cago Jews. The first Jewish Chi-
cagoan was J. Gottlieb, who ar-
rived in 1838, but left shortly
thereafter. Four permanent Jew-
ish settlers to the village of
"Chicagou" came in 1841, among
them one Henry Homer, whose
namesake and descendant was
later to become governor of Il-
linois.

men's Zionist work in Detroit,
will sail Sept. 10 on the liner S. S.

Her husband, before leaving
for Germany, was educational di-
rector of the Jewish Community
Council and a Habonim leader.
Mrs. Cohen was honored at a
farewell gathering Aug. 28 by
Hanita Group of the PWO.
NEW YORK (JTA)—A total of
$39,835,765, the major part of
which comprises contributions
from American Jews, was spent
from January through July of
this year by the United Palestine
Appeal and its agencies, it was
announced.
Heading the list of expendi-
tures in the budget of the Jewish
Agency was the sum of $11,315,317
spent for immigration and relief
for refugees. Included in-this are
the costs of relief and training
abroad; transportation; care of
refugees upon their arrival in
Palestine, which involves feeding,
clothing and providing accommo-
dation, construction of housing
facilities for newcomers and par-
ticipation by the Jewish Agency
in the youth immigration pro-
gram.
For agricultural development,
the Jewish Agency spent $5,646,-
782 during the seven-month pe-
riod, with which it helped to
establish 16 new settlements and
to expand those already in ex-
istence. The remainder was spent
on land acquisition, urban devel-
opment, resettlement of ex-serv-
icemen, care of war invalids and
educational projects.

Bad Will Tour
J. Frank Norris, extreme Fundamentalist preacher and Gerald
L. K. Smith disciple, will soon visit Palestine in the course of a tour
of Europe and the Near East. He is reportedly equipped with recom-
mendations from the Washington Arab Office, the Institute for Az-ab
American Affairs, and Benjamin Friedman's League for Peace with
Justice in Palestine. Friedman is racing neck and neck with Henry G.
Klein, the Col. E. N. Sanctuary, for the affection of you know who
. • Norris claims that Sir Stanford Cooper, head of the Ford Motor
Co. in Europe, arranged at least part of the junket, the bulletin
of Friends of Democracy reveals in an expose.

FBI Wasting Time
The FBI has been wasting time in recent weeks, sending around
its agents to Jewish meetings protesting British policy. Reason: The
British Embassy ratted that the Zionists are pro-Communist, of all
things. Evidence: Gromyko's speech at the UN section. The FBI'ers
however, are quite aware of the fatubusness of their mission . . .
Nathan Friedman Yellin's (terrorist Stern group's chieftain) inter-
view to an American press scoring the Truman doctrine and honey-
ing the Soviets did little good to the Jewish cause.

Pocket Books
The Agudath Israel Youth Council has launched a useful project
—pocket books, 25 cents a piece, subsidized by the Spero Foundation
"dedicated to the advancement of traditional Judaism through the
publication and distribution of Jewish classics, educational literature,
and allied purposeful, philahthropic activities." Editor Rabbi Joseph
Elias is doing a bang-up job. We have before us three of these pocket
books—"Confessions" by the late Nathan Birnbaum, one of the most
colorful contemporary Jewish personalities; "The Book of Passover,"
an anthology, and Yehuda Halevi s "The Kuzari" (adopted by Henry
Biberfeld), a textbook on Judaism.

ization are hampering Agudas
Israel efforts on behalf of ortho-
dox DPs, Jacob Rosenheim, world
president of the Agudas Israel
Organization, stated here. Rosen-
helm assailed the recent agree-
ment between the Orthodox Vaad
Hatzalah and the JDC, which
provided for assumption by the
JDC of the Vaad Hatzalah's re-
lief activities in Europe. He
charged that the agreement ex-
cludes the Agudah.
He also declared that the
Agudah demands abolition of the
White Paper, a political regime
assuring Palestine's internal
unity and regulation of immigra-
tion by a nonpartisan Jewish
body. He sharply attacked ter-
rorism.
