Latin Americans Like Emma Schaver Recitals Gestapo Officers to Hang For Murders at Dachau Reviews ,in Chilean papers show that the concert tour of Mrs. Emma Schaver, Detroit so- prano, is a full success. In a con- cert in Santiago, Chile, she sang Jewish songs as well as arias by Handel and Puccini. The re- viewers agree that Mrs. Scha- ver's voice is excellent and praise the concert as one of the high- lights of the Santiago season. The concert had to be repeated. From Santiago, Mrs. Schaver left for Buenos Aires, and after a few recitals in Brazilian cities, she will return to Detroit. I Our Letter Box I Reader Says Britain Seeks Free Hand In Middle East Editor, The Jewish News: For the past two years the American press has been flooded with reports about the sad plight of England. Anyone with a spark of compassion could not help but shed a tear at the story of the British Lion—once the monarch of the jungle—sick and hungry, licking his wounds with a fevered tongue, his life blood oozing away. England's friends will be happy to learn that the reports have been exaggerated or, at least, that the patient is recovering quickly. Britain is becoming "her - old self again". Every day we see new signs of her normal, hereditary, ingrained habits coming to the surface again. Here is an example. Recently the British High Court commuted the death sentence of three Ger- man generals but refused to do the same in the case of three Jews in Palestine. Anyone who knows British history can under- stand the reason. Britain under- stands, and respects, military power and the desire for con- quest. The three Jews were rebels against the British yoke and therefore must be merciless- ly destroyed. Then, the inhuman acts of the German generals were committed in Italy, against Ital- ians, while the Jewish rebels ac- tually killed, a few English sol- diers. There is a difference, you know. In Greece, England maneuver- ed us into assuming the full cost and responsibility of protecting her interests. Knowing that Americans are averse to sending their sons overseas, she laid the foundation for the settlement of the Palestine problem in a 'man- ner satisfactory to England. When the day arrives for the final settlement of that problem by the United Nations she will offer to witIrtlraw from Palestine on condition that America takes over. By that time, she is shrewdly betting, our experience in Greece will have become so irritating to us that America will say: we may as well let England stay there. This is exactly what , Britain wants—a free hand in the Middle East. WALTER JACKSON HIGH HOLY DAY SERVICES Will Be Held in the THREE AUDITORIA of the UNITED HEBREW SCHOOLS PHILADELPHIA-BYRON DAVID W.
