Let Us Live Like Men,
DPs Beg UN Visitors
HOHNE CAMP, British Zone,
Germany, (JTA)—On the last lap
- of its tour of the DP camps,
the UNSCOP sub-committee wit-
nessed the dramatic departure of
400 certificate-b ear i n g Jews
from this camp for Palestine.
The former camp inmates were
sent off amid cheer and the sing-
ing of Hatikvah and received the
best wishes of the committee
members.
"How long must we remain
trapped here? We want to work
and live like men, not rot. Why
does not the world hear us?" _
These were the questions
which displaced Jews in Berlin
asked the members of the United
Nations group.
Both Gen. Lucius D. Clay,
American commander in Ger-
many, and Maj. Gen. Sir Brian
Robertson, Deputy commander
of the British zone, told the
UN investigators that Germany
was infested with racism and
mounting anti-Semitism.
Gen. Clay said he doubted it
was possible to absorb great num-
bers of Jews into German econ-
omy without exposing the rest
of the Jewish population to the
danger of increased anti-Semit-
ism. He stated that the displaced
Jews in the camps were leading
an "unnatural life" and without
an economic future.
2000 Processed For Palestine
The British deputy commander
stated that the majority of the
10,800 displaced Jews in his zone
wish to emigrate to Palestine
and that only some would go to
other countries if given the op-
portunity.
Brigadier A. G. Kenchington,
commander of the biggest DP
camp in the British zone, told
the UN delegates that since Feb-
ruary more than 2,000 Jews
from the camp have been pro-
cessed for emigration, chiefly
for Palestine.
Harold J. Fishbein, a camp di-
rector for the International
Refugee Organization, today told
the members of the UN group
that 25 per cent of the 6000 dis-
placed Jews in two camps on the
outskirts of Berlin would like to
emigrate to the United States,
if the doors of Palestine remain
closed to them.
Fishbein, who is in charge of
the Doppelzentner camp with a
population of 3,400 and the Mari-
endorf center with 2,628 DPs,
said that when the camps open-
ed in Dec. 1945, 95 per cent of
the residents registered for im-
migration to Palestine and no-
where else.

When the S. S. Sobieski arrived recently in New York, there was
one newcomer the port and dock workers of United Service for New
Americans did not expect. She was two-day-old Brucha, ("Blessed")
„born to Rabbi and Mrs. DaVid Rozen aboard the Polish liner at sea.
The couple were among the 100 newcomers on the "Sobieski,"
including 70 rabbis and their families, who were aided in their
immigration by USNA and the Joint Distribution Committee.
Brucha is the first child born to Rabbi and Mrs. David •Rozen,
who have .,btfen married for 11 years. The couple; natives of Poland,
were among the thousands of Jews who fled to Russia during the
Nazi invasion of their homeland. After the war, they made their
way back to Poland, then France, until plans for their immigration
were completed.
Rabbi Rozen and his family are now staying at the United
Service reception center in New York.
