CHARLOTTE J. BROWN

NEW YORK (JPS)—One of
the oldest Jewish settlements
outside of Palestine, the famous
colony of "White Jews" in Co-
chin, on the west coast of India,
which for almost 19 centuries
survived war, massacres and per-
secution by various races, faces
extinction within the next 10 or
15 years due to natural decline,
the New York Herald Tribune
reports.
According to legend, the
Tribune says, 10,000 Jews sailed
in a fleet from Palestine after
the second Temple of Jerusalem
was destroyed by the Romans,
and settled at the ancient port
of Graganot, in the year 70 A. D.
Within three centuries they es-
tablished a kingdom and lived
peacefully with their Hindu
neighbors, some of them inter-
marrying with Indians, whose
descendants are called "black
Jews."
In the 15th century the colony
was almost exterminated by the
Moors and fled 20 miles south
to present day Cochin. In the
late 16th century the colony
barely managed to survive per-
secution by the Portugese, but
with the advent of the Dutch and
later the English it flourished
again in the 18th century.
Today, according .to S. Koder,
leader of the community, there
are only 10 families, comprising
90 persons concentrated in Syna-
gogue Street. More than 25 per
cent are more than 50 years old
and most of the young people
left are planning to go to Born-
bay and Calcutta. There is little
hope that any will come back.

Mr .and- Mrs. Harry Brown of
Longfellow Ave. announce the
engagement of their daughter,
Charlotte June, to Irving Rosen-
baum, son of Mr. and Mrs. David
Rosenbaum of Tuner Ave. Both
Miss Brown and her fiance are
students in the College of Liberal
Arts at Wayne University. No
wedding date has been set.

Polish Jews Decline
Participation in World
Cultural Congress

U. S. Envoy In France
Greets A. J. C. Group

WARSAW. (JTA) —The Cen-
tral Jewish Committee in Poland
has decided unanimously not to
participate in the World Jewish
Cultural Congress to take placer
at the end of this year in the
United States. The congress is
convoked by the Jewish Labor
Committee in collaboration with
the Jewish Writers Union and a
number of other Jewish cultural
groups in New York.
Pointing out that the Yikuf had
decided a year ago to call such
a congress, the Central Jewish
Commtitee said the present move
of the Jewish Labor Committee
and its affiliated groups clashes
with the Yikuf plan.

of Europe and stressed the role it
could play in combatting anti-
democratic forces and defending
Jewish rights.
French Minister of Labor Dan-
iel Mayer tendered a reception
to Drs. Slawson and Wolfsohn.
Many Jewish leaders attended the
reception.
