Bar Kochba Era Is Parallel

The National C-onvention of the

the form differs.
In hollows, caves and grottoes
of the mountains, Bar Kochba
stored up ample food and arms,
and was prepared to tackle the
enemy abruptly, with little notice
on the part of -the Roman spies.
The cavalry of Martius Turbo
could not prevail against the
boulders hurled down from pre-
cipitous-heights. Turbo and Turn-
Lis Rufus were reluctant to give
open battle, an advantage to the
revolutionists.
The Same Methods
There is a parallel in the pres-
ent struggle: caches of arms, and
sabotage by both the Haganah
and the Irgun, the so-called "ter-
rorists." One author compares the
'present strategem of the under-
ground to the Sicarii. But I think
that it resembles the pattern of
the period of Bar Kochba. Sub-
stitute names again, call Church-
ill's White Paper the edict of Had-
rian; designate the Haganah and
the underground as part of Bar
Kochba's uprising. Alter the
names of Julianus and Pappus to
that of Menahem Beitner and you
have a clear picture of unpreced-
ented identity.
I do not regard the Haganah
and Irgun underground forces as
extremists; they are 'modern Bar
Kochbas. Only let us hope that
there will not be another Bethar.

The misrule of Hadrian during the Bar Kochba era and the
present misrule of the British Colonial Office in Palestine offer
cps
striking parallels.

numbers and enthusiasm to the

some sort of independence in
Palestine. The last battle fought
at Bethar was the end of the
Jewish aspirations for statehood.
Policy of Moderation
At that time there were con-
servatives and moderates among
the Jews, such as Joshua ben

to Egypt to ask Hadrian to re-
voke his edict about the building

Against Lebanon

NEW YORK (Palcor)--_An ar.
tide by Habib J. Awad, a Leba-
nese scholar residing in the U. S.,
listed the dangers to Lebanese
independence in the Greater
Syria plan, in Commonweal, lead-
ing liberal Catholic magazine . in
America. Awad points out Pal-
estine is not the only pressing
problem in the Middle East, and
a_s_cails the present Lebanese re-
gime.
"Unfortimately for- the Leba-
nese," the writer says, "Arab
League aspirations are constant-
ly encouraged by the British.
The majority of the Lebanese
believe that the first step neces-
sary to guarantee their independ-
ence is for the United States,
acting through the United Na-
tions with France, to warn the
predatory members of the Arab
League that America is aware
of the threat to Lebanese inde-
pendence and feels it is neces-
sary to guarantee that independ-
ence."
