Polish Underground
Fighter Finds Haven

A five-foot-two, 120-pound Po-
lish lumberjack who is one of
the few survivors of the Nieswiez
ghetto which was burned to the
ground by the Nazis, has arrived
in Montreal to
join relatives,
and later hopes
to tackle the
timbers of the
Canadian North-
west.
Jacob Lifszyc,
41, roamed the
European conti-

the Nazis. In Italy he found a
cousin who was a member of the
Polish Army and' the latter took

him to England when the British
Government opened its doors to
Polish military men who could
not return to their native land.
When the Nazis entered Nies-
wiez, Lifszyc, his wife, and their
young daughter were placed in
a ghetto. In August, 1942, Lifszyc,

who had seen his family and
friends slain in cold blood, es-
caped from the ghetto and hid
in the forest.' He made contact
with the underground and oper-
ated in White Russia, where he
helped sabotage rail movements
and Nazi installations.
