Lebanon Christians
Support Pro-Zionist
Policy, Back Partition
By Palcor Special Correspondent
•
BEIRUT, Lebanon, (Palcor)—The Maronite
Patriarch told an UNSCOP sub-committee
that not only the Maronite sect but all Chris-
tians in Lebanon favor a pro-Zionist solution
of the Palestine problem, Palcor learned as the
UN Commission closed its hearings and took
off for Geneva. The Patriarch expressed sym-
pathy for Jewish efforts to rehabilitate Pales-
tine and reportedly indicated support of some
sort of partition.
Before the UN Commission left, it was
learned that the Arab hearings were orig-
inally scheduled to be held in Amman, capital
of Transjordan, but the Commission yielded to
the protests of other.Arab States who made it
dear, prior to their acceptance of the invitation
to testify, that they would not under any cir-
cumstances sit in King Abdullah's capital.
(This is another indication of the strained re-
lations between Abdullah, who is said to favor
the Greater Syria Plan, and the Arab States
which oppose it, particularly Syria and
Egypt.) Even after the UN Commission agreed
to go to Beirut, it was not until the eleventh
"-hour before their departure from Palestine
that the Arab States agreed to participate in
=the hearings.
The delay was a result of pressure by the
Arab Higher Committee and the frantic lobby-
ing of its vice-Chairman, Jamal Husseini, act-
ing on orders from the exiled Mufti in Cairo.
The insistance of the Lebanese Ambassador
and UN delegate Charles Malik, in New York,
and Syria's Faris . Bey el Khouri, however,
finally carried the day.
End of Misrule Called
Way to Stop Violence
As Palestine's blood bath turned redder with the hanging
of the three Irgunists--Yosef Weiss, 20, Avshalom Habib, 20,
and Meir Nakgr, 21—on Tuesday morning, at Old Crusaders
Castle Prison at Acre, a storm of protests arose throughout the
world against British policies which are blamed for the unrest
and Zion's "state of war."
Many prominent non-Jews in the United States, England, Palestine
and other countries throughout the world joined with Jewish communi-
ties in protesting against Britain's enforcement of rules which virtually
have turned Palestine into a "police state" and have incited the extrem-
ists of the Jewish underground to resort to violence.
Only by making possible the free entry of Jews. by putting an
end to detention camps in Cyprus and by refraining from deporting
Jews who rightfully seek entrance to Palestine will there be assur-
ance of peace for Palestine, all the protests agree.
Meanwhile arrangements were made spontaneously for memorial
meetings in tribute to the three Irgunists. In Detroit, the United Zionist
Revisionists met on Tuesday night and made plans for a memorial meet-
ing to be held during Shivah week.-
The Irgun, fulfilling its promise to Mayor Israel Rokach of Tel Aviv
that the two kidnapped British sergeants, Mervin Paice and Clifford
Martin, would be "returned within a few hours" after the'hanging of their
three members, who were sentenced to die for leading in the Acre jail
break, made tile bodies of the two men available on' Tuesday night in the
Sharon coastal area. The Britishers were hung in retaliation.
The Irgunists ignored the appeals that were made to them by
the Palestinian Chief Rabbis Isaac Herzog and Ben-Zion Uziel, the
Vaad Leumi and the Jewish Agency, that they refrain from retalia-
tory acts and return the two kidnapped Britishers alive. Their venge-
ful hangings have let loose another reign of terror.
Meanwhile, the deported 4,550 Jews, who were removed from the
"Exodus 1947" and taken to France on three British vessels, have vowed
not to budge and to remain on board the ships, unless they are taken to
their destination—Palestine. Only six of the refugees thus far have con-
sented to go ashore.
