Emma Schauer Wins New

Six Germans to Hang
For Murder of Jews
STETTIN. (JTA)—Crestaw Sto-
larski, former block-leader in the
Austrian death camp Ebensee,
has been sentenced to death by
hanging. Similar sentences were
'imposed on Hans Schroder, leader
of the labor camp at Stettin, AI-
phoris Pietrushevski, an official
of the Mauthausen Camp and An-
tonina Kotowicz, Bruno Ciepi-
kowski and Karl Lehrke, who be-
trayed Jews to the Germans.
Authorities at Lodz announced
that Walter Piller, commandant
of the Chelmno camp. has ad-
mitted responsibility for the
deaths of 17,000 Jews in 1944. On-
ly three Jews escaped the fate
which overtook the rest of the
inmates.
Another mass grave has been
discovered at Ostrow-Mazowiecki,
where 70,000 persons, including
10,000 Jews, met their death. Ac-
cording to an inquiry commission,
the Jews were murdered and bur-
ied separately.
• Emma (Mrs. Morris L.) Schaver, already the possessor or high
laurels bestowed upoh her by Jewish communities in the United
States, Canada, Palestine, Poland and the displaced camps in Ger-
many, is gaining distinction in new areas—in Latin American
countries.
Widely acclaimed for her interpretation of the ghetto songs she
gathered during her six-month stay in Germany, where she gave
concerts at DP camps, at the Latin American Conference of the World
Jewish Congress in Buenos Aires, Argentine, Mrs. Schaver imme-
diately was called upon to give a series of concerts in South America.
More than 30,000 people attended the opening session of the Latin
American Conference, and Mrs. Schaver not only won the hearts of
the large audience, but the Buenos Aires Yiddish newspaper—Die
Yiddishe Presse—immediately contracted with her for a series of
articles on her experiences among the DPs.
Mrs. Schaver commenced her series of 18 concerts—eight of
them in Buenos Aires—on July 24.
The photograph shows Mrs. Schaver singing the "Kol Nidie," with
her own accompaniment on the piano, at the great Buenos Aires mass
meeting. On the left is - Dr. Nahum Goldman, chairman of the
Executive of the World Zionist Congress and a member of the
Executive of the Jewish Agency for Palestine.

It is said that the real reason for Sumner Weller' last-minute
cancellation of his speech before the 50th annual Zionist Convention
in New York was this: He is slated to succeed General Marshall as
Secretary of State in the near future, and was advised not to corn-
promise himself by participation in a purely Zionist affair .
You see, he may have to deal officially with the UN Commission's
report on Palestine.

Music
Cantor Kusevitsky, formerly of Warsaw's largest synagogue, has
just signed a contract with International RCA Victor for the rbcord-
ing of opera, Polish, Russian and Yiddish folk music, and Jewish
liturgy. Cantor Kusevitsky, probably the greatest living exponent
of Jewish liturgy, escaped from Nazi occupied Warsaw, making his
way to the USSR where he toured the battle fronts entertaining the
Red Army. He arrived in the U. S. in 1946. He is managed by the
William Morris Agency.

Movie
Thumbs down on Crossfire. Hollywood's first production dealing
l directly with anti-Semitism. A grade B product, it is unconvincing,_
a cheap thriller, and one is more likely to remember the anti-Semitic
statements by its villain, than the anti-anti-Semitic utterances by the
other players. The treatment is of elementary school level. Six mil-
lion Jews die, and not a single picture has come cut of Hollywood
to memoralize their martyrdom. Then Hollywood moguls got scared
by events on the home scene, and rushed into production something
so clumsily propagandistic as to bring adverse results, if any. The
intellectual "depth" of the filM is illustrated by the warning that
from hating Jews one might progress to hating "men with striped
neckties." Rather not have any films on the subject, than the cross-
fire trash. Incidentally. did you read some weeks ago Broadway
columnist Earl Wilson's interview with Lena Horne? She told of her
own plight, and that the Jews are "not next, they are there already,
as witness the 'restricted' rentals in Beverly Hills."

Press Conference
Dr. Emanuel Neumann's first press conference with J€wish
pressmen last week was mostly off the record. Neumann has scored
high with the press because of his facile tri-linguality and profound
knowledge. There is only one other American Jewish leader who has
managed to establish such informal relations with the Jewish scribes.
He is veteran Louis Lipsky, whose style always evoked their admir-

Of interest to our Jewish leaders who have expressed such en-
thusiasm over the Truman doctrine of aid to Greece and Turkey:
"Estia" is Greece's big industrialist daily newspaper . . . It is on
the list for a subsidy—or so it hopes—from the $250,000,000 fund
which the U. S. has voted to Greece . .. A few weeks ago "Estia"

Miscellany
Larry Friedman, who retained the junior chess championship
in the recent national tournament, is only 16, but he's considered a
Lasker in the making.
Trevor Howard, new English movie star, is a son of the late
Lesie Howard, nee Steiner, we learn.
Dr. Joshua Bloch is reported to be working oh his memoirs,
which will make many Jewish leaders lose sleep, because the doctor
doesn't pull his punches.
The immortality of Jewish leaders often is dependent on organi-
zational politics... . The most unjustly forgotten Zionist leader is
the late Dr. Nahum Sokolow, whose name is never mentioned along-
side those of Herzl, Nordau and eyen Wolfssohn.
Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, who refused to be drafted for a third
term as president of the ZOA, will devote himself to his Temple in
Cleveland for a year, and then - will visit Palestine for an extended
stay.
