A special study of the results
of rapid ' treatment of early
syphilis with penicillin will be
financed by an appropriation
from the Jesse F. Hirschman
of
Memorial Fund, the Board
Trustees of North End Cline
voted this week.
The physicians who will parti-
cipate in the study will work
under the direction of the Clinic's
Department of Dermatology and
Syphilology. Since North End
Clinic is the only agency in De-
troit with a plan for the rapid
treatment of syphilis patients
with penicillin, this project will
provide both additional facilites
for patients and an opportunity
for investigative study which will
cover a two-year period.
The appropriation of $500 from
the Memorial Fund, which was
created at the time of the death
of North End Clinic's first presi-
in-
dent, will defray expenses
cidental to the study, particular-
ly the cost of penicillin.
Hirschman, long active in Jew-
ish communal life; served as
president of the Clinic from 1925
to 1935 and continued as a mem-
ber of the Board of Trustees
until his death in January, 1942.
The Fund was created by a group
.
of his friends who have irieriased
its capacity for useful service by
continued contributions.
North End Clinic is a Red
Feather Service and a member
of the Council of Social Agen-
cies and of the Jewish Welfare
Federation.
