Australian Anti-Semitic
Agitation Reported Based
On Arrival of Refugees

Shertok Charges Palestine Government
Hampers _ Arab -Jewish Cooperation

another member of the Sephardic
delegation, Eli Eliashar, appealed
to him to intervene with the
Indian government to halt the
threatened deportation of some
300 Jews who fled persecution in
Afghanistan.
The United Zionist-Revisionist
Organization submitted a mem-
orandum demanding the immedi-
ate aborgation of the Mandate,
evacuation of British troops and
the establishment of a Jewish
provisional government which
would hold office while' the na-
tion prepared to elect constitu-
tional bodies.
Four of the seven Arab League
states have accepted the corn-
mittee's invitation to testify.
They are Egypt, Iraq, Trans-
jordan _and 'Lebanon.

MELBOURNE (JPS)—The ar-
rival in Australia several months
ago of the Egyptian liner Misr,
with 60 Jewish survivors of Nazi
extermination camps among its
717 passengers, touched off a
storm of anti-Semitic sentiment
in the Commonwealth press and
news-reels, the repercussions of
which have not yet died down.
As a result of the violent cam-
paign against "foreigners," which
are mostly thinly veiled attacks
on Jews, an immigration research
project has been started by the
Jewish Council to Combat Fas-
cism and Anti-Semitism, to gath-
er information on the contribu-
tions to Australian life of Jewish
immigrants who have come here
in the last two decades. The vital
statistics amassed through this
project will be, it is hoped, of
great value in combatting Anti-
Semitism in the Commonwealth.
Of the total of 24,897 new im-
migrants who came to Australia
between the end of the war in
the Pacific and January 31, 1947,
22,274 were British and 2,603 for-
eigners. The number of Jews
among the latter were negligible.
Most of them are death camp sur-
vivors, having relatives in Aus-
tralia who will take care of them.
