Spreading Greek Discrimination
Is Traced to Influence of British

WASHINGTON, (JPS)—When
Foreign Secretary Bevin told
the British Labor Party confer-
ence several weeks ago that ten-
sion over Palestine is bringing
about "a Christian Jewish war,"
he probhbly bore in mind mea-
sures which his own government
has taken to cow Jews in coun-
tries under British influence in
order to disuade them from, and
collectively punish them for,
,Jewry's determination that jus-
tice be done in Palestine.
This has become apparent in
Greece. Anti-Semitism has never

Jewish Refugees
Forced to Return
To Yemen Ghetto

LONDON, (JPS - Palcor) —
Eleven hundred Yemenite Jews
who sought refuge from that
country's degrading anti-Jewish
laws in the adjacent British
Crown Colony. of Aden, have
been forced by the British to re-
"tu•n to Yemen, it was implicitly
admitted by Colonial Secretary
Arthur Creech-Jones in reply to
questions in Commons. Creech-
Jones said the 1100 had been
returned under arrangements
made in 1946 with the Imam of
Yemen who agreed to restore the
"status and rights" of returning
Jews and to provide free trans-
portation and subsistence for
them.
The "status and rights" of Jews
in Yemen, a theocratic state, are,
at best, those of second class citi-
zens. Jews are not permitted to
carry fire arms although in that
country it is essential for the
protection of life and property.
They are not permitted to build
homes higher than Moslem homes
and must get off the sidewalk
when a Moslem passes.
They are restricted in their oc-
-, cupation and forced to clean gut-
ters. sewers, and cesspools and do
other obnoxious jobs. Jewish or-
phan children ar.e...,deagged away
from their kin and placed in
Moslem orphanages for conver-
sion.
Creech-Jones said there are
1700 Yemenite Jews in Adele The
cost of maintaining them and of
administering the refugee camp
in which they are interned, tot-
als $6800 a month borne by Jew-
ish organizations. Some services,
"such as water," are supplied

been wide-spread among the
Greeks until recently. The situ-
ation has now become so serious,
that tli American Jewish Con-
ference has found it necessary to
intervene with the State Depart-
ment. In announcing that it is
"currently discussing with the
State Department reliable reports
to the effect that the position of
Jews in Greece is rapidly de-
teriorating," the American Jew-
ish Conference states:
"The economic plight of the
10,000 Greek Jewish survivors
remains desperate. In addition,
anti-Semitism, which has never
taken root among Greeks, is be-
corning a problem. This may be
due in part to the conniving of
those Greeks who want to hold
on to Jewish property, obtained
illegally during the Nazi occu-
pation.
"Discriminatory actions and
the behavior of some Greek of-
ficials have aroused apprehension
among Greek Jews. For example,
although Jews are granted pass-
ports, it is impossible for them
to obtain the necessary permits
for the Exchange Commission of
the Bank of Greece. This, in ef-
fect, prevents Jews from leaving
the country.
"Jews of all nationalities pass-
ing through Greece, unlike other
travelers, are not permitted to
leave ports or aerodromes while
waiting for boats or planes. Un-
official explanations are that
these restrictions on Jews have
been urged by British author-
ities.
"The Jewish Community of
Athens is disturbed at the un-
usually lenient treatment given
the Jewish quisling, Vial Hasson,
who was responsible for turning
over 52,000 Jews in Salonika to
Nazi executioners. Although he
was condemned to death by a
Salohika tribunal, his execution
has been mysteriously deferred.
Hasson was transferred to Corfu,
where he lives in relative com-
fort and freedom, as chauffeur to
the prison director. Fifteen hun-
dred of his victims who succeed-
ed irla surviving the Oswiecim gas
chambers, demand that his sen-
tence be carried out."

A Call to Arms!

No Time for Despair!

J.ewish National Fund Council's
Tisha b'Ab Call to ComMunity
For Palestine Land Redemption

On the eve of Tisha b'Ab, the Jewish National Fund Council of Detroit issues
to the entire Jewish community of Detroit this call to arms:

When we go to our synagogues this Saturday evening and on Sunday, to mourn
the destruction of the Temples in Jerusalem and the exile of our people from Eretz
Israel, it is our responsibility to redeem our courage and to strive for the liberation
of our people.

THIS IS NO TIME FOR DESPAIR!

The work for the redemption of Palestine goes on, regardless of any provoca.

ti ons.

If we are to find genuine consolation in our sorrows, we must unite in the task
of speeding the redemption of Palestine and the acquisition of the Holy Soil as
the property of the entire Jewish people.

Tisha b'Ab must be made an occasion not for endless mourning, but for deter.
mined effort to repair the damage that has been done to Israel's well-being.

At this time we renew tbp traditional appeal to our community to go to the
synagogues on Tisha b'Ab and to respond liberally to The appeals that will be made
for the Jewish National Fund, the land redemption agency of our people.

By redeeming more and more soil in Palestine, we will be signaling our message
to the Jews of Palestine, that we are going forward, that we are closing ranks and are
pursuing vigorously the task of assuring a Homeland in the land of Israel.

This is a peaceful . c.all to spiritual arms!

Our way of redeeming Zion is by acquiring the land through toil, with the coins
of our entire people gathered throughout the world.

By joining in the redemption of the land, Jews everywhere express their
solidarity with the cause of freedom and liberation.

The security of Palestine's Jewish community of 600,000 lies in the courage
we give them in their battle for justice and in the acquisition of more land as the
property of the Jewish people.

Obstacles placed in the path of our national redemption come from sources
which seek to interfere with the only Mandate over Palestine that is valid for our
people: the Bible. We call upon our people to remember the words of Isaiah
(65.21-22):

r

"THEY SHALL BUILD HOUSES, AND INHABIT THEM; AND
THEY SHALL PLANT VINEYARDS, AND EAT THE FRUIT OF
THEM. THEY SHALL NOT PLANT, AND ANOTHER EAT;
FOR AS THE DAYS OF A TREE SHALL BE THE DAYS OF MY
PEOPLE, AND MY CHOSEN ONES SHALL LONG ENJOY THE
WORK OF THEIR HANDS.

Go to your Synagogues!

Join in prayer for the redemption of Zion!

Give liberally to the Jewish National Fund!
