JNF Council Arranges Traditional
Tisha b'Ab Solicitation in Synagogues

Arrangements are being com-
pleted by the Jewish National
Fund Council of Detroit for the
annual Tisha b'Ab traditional col-
, lections in local synagogues, for
Palestine land redemption.
Irving W. Schlussel, president
of the Council, stated this week
, that volunteer.workers have been
mobilized to speak briefly during
services on Saturday night and
Sunday, July 26 and 27, in behalf
of JNF.
"In view of the fact that only
pledges can be accepted on Sat-
urday night, since the Sabbath
will still be in force, it is our hope
that Detroit Jews will make their
contributions during services on
Sunday morning, or will mail
their checks to the JNF Council
office, 11608 Dexter," Schlussel
stated. •
William Hordes, chairman of
the board of the JNF Council,
presided at a meeting on July
8, at the JNF office, at which
tributes were paid to the mem-
ories of Dr. Theodor Herzl and
Chaim Nachman Bialik, the anni-
versaries of whose death occurred
July 8 and 9. Philip Slomovitz
was the speaker.
Mr. Hordes announced at this
meeting that Branch 3 of the
Poale Zion honored Mr. and
Mrs. Benjamin M. Laikin by
inscribing their names in the
Golden Book on the occasion

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Chief
Rabbis Isaac Herzog and Ben

Rokach appealed to 'Palestine
High Commissioner Sir Alan Cun-
ningham and military command-
er Lt. Gen. Gordon H. A. Mac-
Millan for clemency for the three
Jewish youths condemned to die
for participating in the Acre jail
break.
Asher Levitsky, an attorney
representing the families of the
condemned men, appealed to
Cunningham for commutation of
the sentence. Making a special
plea for Edith Weiss, who jour-
neyed from Czechoslovakia to be
with her brother Jacob, Levitsky
pointed out that Weiss had served
the Allied cause well in the war
when, as a partisan, he placed
his life in jeopardy to rescue Al-
lied war prisoners. Levitsky also
made a formal plea to Gen. Mac-
Millan asking for a stay of exe-
cution pending Cunningham's ac-
tion on the case.
An appeal for clemency for
Weiss was made to Cunningham
by Dr. John Novak, Czeehjon-
sul general in Jerusalem.
The Irgun said that "if a crim-
inal hand is raised against our
three 'prisoners of war' we shall
make our arrows red with the
blood of the hangman." In a
statement issued to the press it
appealed to the United Nations
Special Committee on Palestine
"to fulfill its duty and prevent
the murder" of the three men.
