JERUSALEM, (JTA)—The He-
brew University this week con-
ferred its first two honorary de-
grees of Doctor of Phitbsophy on
Dr. Chaim Weizmann and Dr.
Judah L. Magnes, president of
the University.
Dr. Magnes, in a speech fol-

of the institution. The awards
were made by Sir Leon Simon,
chairman of the University's
executive council.
Mrs. Weizmann and Mrs. Mag-
nes attended the exercises and,
with their husbands, were visibly
affected by the occasion.
Dr. Weizmann was cited as a
"statesman of genius, dreamer of
Zion." Dr. Magnes' degree told
how he had brought from Amer-
ica, where he was born, the
'crown of a good name and large
communal experience as one of
the great organizers of American
Jewry.•
British representatives at the
exercises included the director
of Barclays Bank and head of the

At the next meeting of the
League, Thursday evening, July
24, at the home of Matt Harris,
8530 Woodrow Wilson, the topic
for discussion will be Bartley

Mandate must continue for five
years or longer or a UN trustee-
ship should replace the Mandate.
He suggested Britain as a likely
trustee because of her traditional
liberalism with which she tries
to solve the India and Burma
problems. Asked by Czech dele-
gate Karel Lisicky if, after see-
ing the results of 25 years of

British rule, Jews and Arabs
would be happy under such a
trusteeship, Magnes said the two
peoples would accept such a
trusteeship. He said that neither
Jews nor Arabs had made a de-
termined and systematic effort
for cooperation, but that many
are looking for courageous lead-
ership to deliver them out of the
evils of political tension, national
passion and physical terror. He
condemned partition as imprac-
tical and as a misfortune for
Jews and Arabs.

NEW YORK, (JTA) — The
"Fighters for the Freedom of Is-

the Stern Group, are opposed to
the partition of Palestine and will

the alleged deputy commander of
the Sternists, who gave his name
only as "Mr. Hillel," told a press
conference here.
The more than a dozen repor-
