Louis Lipsky Explains
His Convention Address
Editor. The Jewish News:
I have been rebuked by many
good friends for having omitted
in my address at the concluding
mass meeting of the Z.O.A. Con-
vention in Manhattan Center
any reference to Dr. Chaim
Weamann.
I 011•e these friends an apology
and an explanation.
The mass meeting began
i ► romptly at 8 o'clock. Dr. Neu-
mann delivered the opening
address. Sumner Welles had been
announced as one of the speakers,
but was unable to attend and in
his place U. S. Senators Murray
and Brewster delivered political
addresses unrelated to the his-
torical occasion. Belarsky, the
singer, followed with four songs.
Then. instead of Dr. Silver corn-
ing after me as the program
indicated. he was introduced by
Dr Neumann with the explana-
tion that he (Dr. Silver) was
feeling very tired, would say
only a few words, and then
wished to leave. Dr. Silver, how-
ever. spoke at length. When he
finished his address, he received
a great ovation and remained on
the platform for the rest of the
evening It was then about 11
o'clock.
.
[ advised Dr. Neuman to close
the meeting. Dr. Silver, in the
manner of his speaking, had
virtu illy brought the meeting to
a close. I had intended to give an
intimate summary of Zionist
events for the past fifty years.
Such: a recital would have to
avoid a high pitch and project
itself in a lower key and in softer
words But I did not want to
make a scene by declining to
speak at the urgent request of
the Chairman. It would have
marred the closing meeting of
the convention. I decided at once
to abreviate my story, and while
on my feet, reached the decision
to rush to the end of my address
—w hich I had planned in ad-
vance—and to close within 15 to
20 minutes. This prevented my
giving any time at all to what
Dr. Weizmann had done for Am-
erie_in Zionism. It also compelled
me to eliminate any of the re-
ferences I had intended to make
t» Schma•a Levin, Bialik, as
well as to Dr. Wise. Three-
quarters of what I had intended
to sly had to be abandoned.
It was an unfortunate situation
for which I was not responsible,
nor could I have avoided it. It
seen , s that the managers of the
meeting were not keen about
eelebi sting the fifty years of
Zionean.

Describes Miracle
Of Piano's Shelter
NEW YORK—The story of how
a piano saved her life in Bun--
pest during the
war was told
when Mrs. Jan-

Hungarian Jew-
ess, arrived this
week in transit
to Mexico City,
where the He-

reunit ing her Mrs. Hajos
with her only kin, a daughter
and son-in-law.
When Luftwaffe bombers swept
down on the Budapest ghetto one
day in 1944, Mrs. Hajos ran for
shelter into the home of a phy-
sician, whom she found hiding
under a piano. She joined him,
and a few minutes later a near-
hit caused the roof of the house
to collapse. The pair miraculously
escaped unscathed.
After liberation by Allied
troops, Mrs. Hajos appealed to
BIAS representatives to help her
emigrate to Mexico, where her
daughter had married a bank
official in 1941. He is Dr. L. Nagy

Britain Fails in UN
Anti-Migration Move
LAKE SUCCESS, (JTA)—The
to
British government's effort
secure the cooperation of member
states of the United Nations in
preventing "illegal" Jewish im-
migration to Palestine was ap-
praised here as "a colossal fail-
ure."
Of the 16 of the 55 member-
nations polled by the UN secre-
tariat on the British request that
they cooperate in "doing all in
their power to discourage illegal
immigration into Palestine," only
tiny Guatemala gave a positive
assurance of cooperation on the
immigration issue.
Nine of the 16 are nations from
the Western Hemisphere with
little, if any, direct contact with
immigration lanes. Even the
British dominion of Canada side-
stepped the request. Australia
remained equally noncommittal.
None of the countries in the
path of the Jewish exodus from
Europe—France, Poland, Yugo-
slavia, Czechoslovakia or the
Scandinavian members—replied.
The Soviet Union bluntly stated
it had no concern with illegal
immigration.
Most of those who made re-
plies did so in the mogr formal
of acknowledgements. Most all
affirmed adherence to the Gen-
eral Assembly resolution calling
for abstention from violence.
The United States reply also
avoided direct commitment to the
British request by forwarding
President Truman's statement
which calls for abstention from
"any activities" tending to pro-
mote violence - in Palestine.

NEW YORK.—The current is-
sue of the Columbia Law Review,
published by the Law School of
Columbia University, approved
the legal basis for the complaint
against Columbia University's
Appointments Office, filed by the
American Jewish Congress, and
agreed that the State Commis-
sion Ag a i n st Discrimination
(SCAD) had acted within its
jurisdiction in denying the Uni-
versity's claim to exemption.
Indicating the correctness of
SCAD's interpretation of the
Ives-Quinn law, the article went
on to state: "The ruling elimin-

crimination which would other-
wise remain available to employ-
ers desiring to evade the act."
