Why anyone should wish to sling mud at the Hapoel Soccer team,
whose tour of the U. S. has done more to create goodwill for the
Palestine cause than most speeches and mass meetings, we don't
know. But some people have been pitching hard with mud, and
managed to deceive some of our fellow-columnists ircto accepting
unadulterated mud as "inside dope."
Anyone familiar with the functions of Hapoel and other Pales-
tine physical culture organizations could only be amused by the
report that the Hapoel soccer boys broke training. They are not just
a team. They have lived, ever since they joined Hapoel. under the
most rigid discipline, and their trainers are really their chiefs who
can order them at a moment's notice to set out in the dark of night
to set_LLp settlements in the Negev. Such men break training,

Another .colleague reported that Hapoel walked off the field in
San Francisco and refused to finish their game. Get your facts
straight. Haskel. The incident you have in mind took place in Los
Angeles. not in San Francisco, and you should know that it is the
rule in soccer that a team walks off the field to protest a referee's
decisions. On this occasion Hapoel had only two minutes left to play.
In America. where soccer is played by professionals this walking
off rule has been suspended to give the public itS money's worth.
They walked off because referee Best suddenly reversed himself
after having accorded them a second goal, which would have made
the score 2 to 1 in favor of Hapoel. When they protested in tradition-
al manner, the referee punished them by giving the decision to the
Los Angelans. The U. S. Football Association has since written the
umpire, admonished him and declared the game a tie.
When Haskel saw Hapoel's last game June 17 at Ebbets Field,
when they lost 2 to 0, it was their fourth game within a week, they
all were fatigued, some of the players were bandaged, and five of
their star men, having been badly bruised earlier in the week, were
out of the game.
It can happen to any columnist. It has happened to Arnold Levin
on occasion. I'm sure, however, that this is the last time their mis-
informants can hope to have Haskel's or Phineas' ears.

Zionist Echoes

Now that the convention of the Zionist Organization of America
is over, intensive Zionist activities will start in preparation for the
UN General Assembly in September . . . Between now and the
meeting of the Assembly, where the recommendations of the UN
inquiry committee on Palestine will be acted upon, much will have
to be done in Washington . . . For this task the new administration
of ZOA will mobilize all its forces . . . As had been expected, the
"Silver-Neumann line" emerged victorious at the convention . .
American Zionists have long been tired of the nickname "Dollar
Zionism" sarcastically given by the world Zionist activities in the
U. S. . . . The "Silver-Neumann line" for the first time introduced
a policy of active political work, relegating fund-raising activities
to the background . . . And it is because of this line that the Zionist
movement in this country gained more prestige in the Yishuv in
recent months than it had from the dollars American Jewry has
been sending to Palestine . . . One no longer hears-remarks concern-
ing "Dollar Zionism," and the Zionist movement in this country is
taken seriously as a political power despite the fact that the Olt.
convention received no message from President Truman.
