The Fourth of July is a red letter day in the history of the Amer-
R an people . . . This year it will be a red letter day in the history
of American Zionism . . . On that day the 50th annual convention
of the Zionist Organization of America will take place in New York
. And while millions of people will spend the day at the beaches
and at country places, about 2,000 Zionist delegates from all parts
of the country will sweat it out at the Hotel Pennsylvania . . . The
issue will-not be how to best celebrate the golden anniversary of
the Zionist movement in this country, but how to elect the best
possible president of the ZOA . .. This is a very important issue.
since many observers are convinced that American action will be
the major factor in determining the Palestine solution.
One need not be a prophet to predict that, despite certain
opposition, Dr. Emanuel Neumann will emerge from the con-
vention as president. . . The Silver-Neumann line is the line '
accepted today by the large majority of American Zionists; .
And this will be made clear not only by Neumann's election as
head of the ZOA, but by the tone of the political resolutions
which the convention will adopt... In these resolutions, one can
safely predict that emphasis will be laid on the necessity for
prodding the U.S. Government to more concrete action on the
Palestine issue.. .
Incidentally, Loy Henderson, the top State Department expert
on Palestine has assured a number of important persons that oil
was not the basic or even an important motive in the U.S. attitude
towards the Palestine problem. . . He also revealed that the State
Department did not accept the recommendations of the Anglo-
American Inquiry Committee on Palestine because its officials were
informed by American Jewish leaders that the recommendations
were not acceptable to American Zionists.

Modern Maranos

Speaking of 50 years of American Zionism, it is remarkable how
the Zionist movement in this country has grown from a small mem-
bership in the pre-Nazi days to the 200,000 on the rolls at present...
There were years not so long ago when the Hadassah had a larger
membership than the ZOA. . . It is obvious that anti-Semitism
makes Jews more Zionist-minded. . Moses Hess, a German-Jewish
Socialist, who for some time worked with Karl Marx, laid the
foundations for political Zionism largely because he was shocked
and horrified by the Damascus Blood Libel. . . Leo Pinsker, an
assimilated Russian-Jewish physician, became an advocate of the
Zionist idea after being aroused by the Czarist pogroms of 1881.. .
Dr. Theodore Herzl, the father of political Zionism, was completely
assimilated and came to Zionism only as a result of the ugly Dreyfus
case in France. . . Max Nordau, also completely assimilated, be-
came a Zionist only after a waiter in a restaurant in Germany gave
him a note in an empty glass reading "Jews are not served here". . .
Zionism took roots in Russia before World War I because anti-
Semitism was stronger there than anywhere else in the world. . . .
It grew in Poland between the two world wars, because -Poland took
over the role of "Anti-Semitic Country No. 1" after the fall of the
Czarist regime in Russia. . . . The Zionist movement was weak in
Germany until Hitler started his anti-Jewish persecutions. . .
Can it be that Zionism has grown during recent years in the
United States because anti-Semitism has been stronger in this
country during the last ten years than ever before? . . . Well,
the hearings on the FEPC bill now in Washington indicate some-
thing to this effect . . . And the Jewish office girls who wear the
cross conspicuously around their necks in order to pose as Christians
so that they can hold their jobs, are another indication. . . Not to
speak of Jewish engineers and chemists who must play the role
of maranos if they want to get a position in heavy industry.. , And
of executives in certain business enterprises who are afraid to be
recognized as Jews. . . And of Jewish youths who find it almost
impossible to get employment in banks and in law firms in Wall
Street. . . The weaker' elements among them seek to disassociate
themselves from Judaism for good and forever, but what about those
with a stronger character? • . . Many of the latter are attracted to
ZiOnisin as a reaffirmation of their faith.

Civil Servants
This is a note on some Palestine civil servants, past and present
You have read about Sir Henry Gurney., the arrogant new chief
secretary. Reports from the Gold Coast are that he left behind him
a trail of ruthless administrative practices and was transferred to
Palestine as a penal measure against the Yishuv. A man on whom
Sir, however very little the title means, does not fit well; an ignorant
supercilious red tape expert, he has outraged and been outraged by
all Palestinians and visitors who have come in contact with him - . .
He is all that a cruel, as brutal as only petty officials can be.
He succeeded Sir John Shaw, a far more cultured and amiable
individual, crumple-suited, bohemian, arty and well-read. Sir John's
appearance is deceptive. Some people had thought him passably,
well-disposed to the Jews, but in reality it was Sir John, and not the
High Commissioners who come and go, who administered Palestine
and advised London . . . He was transferred from Palestine and
kicked upstairs following investigations into the circumstances under
which scores of people lost their lives in the Irgun bombing of the
King David Hotel. According to Eschnab, an unofficial organ. the in-
vestigation revealed that 'Sir John and his aides Were given 20 min-
utes to clear the building because it was mined. Sir John however,
is alleged to have stated that the Chief Secretariat must not allow
itself to be intimidated by terrorists. He is alleged to have ordered
his staff to stay on, while he himself picked up his hat and instead
of ambling, as he usually did, ran for dear life.
And then there is the scandal about a high official who died in
the 13ombing. This man virtually controlled the life and death of
Palestine's industry. After his death the famous Tammany "iron
box" was discovered among his effects. It contained a veritable for-
tune. The press inquired about how the deceased had acquired this
wealth, but was never given a satisfactory reply. The mystery of
the - tin box" remains.
These three characterizations typify the range of the British of-
ficialdom in Palestine. from the ruthless and smug through the
deceptive to the corrupt.

Refugee Charges Poison Masks
Used in Nazi Extermination System

A little-publicized Nazi method
of murder was described by a 71-
year-old survivor of an "exter-
minated" village, Mrs. Ghava
Markuschamer, in an article in
last Sunday's Detroit Times.
Mrs. Markuschamer, who is
now staying with her son, Men-
del Marcus of 3225 Monterey,
told of the use of poisoned gas
masks, which killed several resi-
dents of her town, Wyszkow, near
Warsaw, .during the Nazi inva-
sion of Poland in 1939.
