Lie Is Charged with Linking
United Nations with

Britain's Policy

HUDSON'S

(Special Wire to Jewish News)

LAKE SUCCESS, N. Y. (JTA)
—The Jewish Agency protested
to the UN against Secretary Gen-
eral Trygve Lie's circulation of
the British note on curbing Pal-
estine immigration and particu-
larly against his asking that he
be informed of action taken in
response to the British request.
The Agency said the UN is
not committed to the British Pal-
estine immigration policy and
therefore cannot take action on
that score. Therefore, the British
note and Lie's action would ap-
pear "altogether out of ordef."
The note said Lie, by asking
member nations of the UN to
inform him of their actions, was
improperly linking the UN with
British policy as "arbitrarily de-
termined by Britain alone."
The Agency pointed out Lie is
not bound to accept the British
"unilateral interpretation" of the
resolution adopted by the Gen-
eral Assembly urging peace in
Palestine pending the UN investi-
gation. It said there is nothing
in the resolution empowering Lie
to implement it or to ask mem-
ber states to report on compli-
ance with the British request. "In
doing so," the Agency said, "it
is submitted that he went outside
and beyond the scope of his func-
tions."
The Agency asked Lie to cir-
cularize its note among member
nations and informed him that
it was sending a copy to the in-
quiry committee since the "action
of the Secretary General intro-
duced new and prejudicial factors
in the situation."

Canadian Jews
Reflect Bronfman
President of CJC

MONTREAL—Delegates to the
Canadian Jewish Congress, con-
vening here, heard reports urg-
ing the Canadian government to
admit DPs, disclosing improved
relations between Catholics and
Jews, and urging the UN inquiry
committee to recommend the
establishment of a Jewish state
in -Palestine.
The session also condemned
terrorism in Palestine, reaffirmed
Canadian Jewry's solidarity with
the Jewish Agency and voiced
its readiness for continued co-
operation with the World Jewish
Congress.
Among the speakers who ad-
dressed the convention were
Louis Lipsky, Dr. Sqlo Baron and
Dr. Nahum Goldmann, who
charged the terrorists and those
who glorify them as being "the
greatest danger to the realization
of our hopes for a Jewish nation-
al home in Palestine."
At a plenary session, the dele-
gates learned that $2,215,770 will
be needed in 1947 to finance do-
' mestic and overseas relief pro-
grams backed by Canadian Jews.
Samuel Bronfman, reelected
president of the Congress, told
delegates that the organization
is simultaneously active on the
social welfare as well as rescue
and relief fronts, and had helped
to safeguard the civil, religious

and political rights of Jews in
Canada.

Extremists Kidnap
2 British Policemen

(Special Cable to Jewish News)

JERUSALEM (JTA)—A band
of 12 extremists kidnaped two
British policemen from the swim-
ming pool at Ramath Gan, escap-
ing in a waiting automobile. Two
British soldiers who also were
present were not molested. Armed
with tommy guns, the kidnapers
held off 150 Jews and set off
smoke bombs to cover their re-
treat. The kidnaped policemen
later made their escape.
