Combined Services
To Mark Graduation
At Shaarey Zedek
Members of the Shaarey Zedek
Junior Congregation will take
charge of the Sabbath services
in the Main Synagogue this Sat-
urday morning.
Charles Kramer will give a
farewell address on behalf of the
12th grade graduates. The service
will honor the graduates.
At 8:15 p. m. Friday the 12th
grade commencement exercises
will be combined with the month-
ly late Friday evening services.
Rabbi Adler will address the
graduates. Cantor J. H. Sonenklar
and his choir will sing.
Edwin Ross Lewinson will be
valedictorian. Suzanne Miriam
Berger will present the ilass gift.
Daniel E. Levin will present the,
'class symbol to Henry Lonner-
stater of the 11-A.
Harry M. Shulman, president
of the Congregation, will present
the award of the National Fed-
eration of Men's Clubs. Shulman
and Charles E. Rubiner, vice
president, will present the di-
plomas to the 30 graduates. Dr.
Leonard Sidlow, new educational
committee chairman, also will
speak. ,
The Institute of Adult Jewish
Studies of the Northwest He-
brew Congregation last 'week
celebrated the close of its suc-
cegsful first year with a cul-
tural evening held in the syna-
gogue social hall.
Rabbi Jacob E. Segal conduct-
ed the concluding session of the
Tuesday evening lecture course
on "Jewish Customs and Cere-
monies." Short addresses were
made by J. Maurice Karo, chair-
man of the adult education coun-
cil; Ira G. Kaufman, congrega-
tion president; Sam Bez, presi-
dent of the Men's Club, and Mrs.
Sidney-Siegan, on behalf of the
class.
Certificates of achievement, is-
sued by the Jewish Theological
Seminary's National Academy of
Adult Jewish Studies, were
awarded to 80 men and women
who had attended the Hebrew
and lecture classes.
At Sabbath services this Sat-
urday morning, Rabbi Segal's
sermon topic will be "Finding
God in the Wilderness." Mincha
services at 6 p. m., will be fol-
lowed by Rabbi Segal's discourse Additional Congregational News
on "Ethics of the Fathers."

VHS to Graduate Two
Junior High Classes
Two junior high school classes
will be graduated from the Unit-
ed Hebrew Schools on Wednes-
day, June 25, at 7:30 p.m., in the
auditorium of the Rose Sittig
Cohen Building.
The members of these two
classes have completed the course
prescribed by the United Hebrew
Schools, including studies of the
prophets, Chumash and Rashi,
literature, grammar and compo-
sition, and Jewish history.
Instructors are: Joseph Haggai,
Max Gordon and Aaron Toback.
The graduation ceremony will
feature Hebrew playlets staged
by members of the graduation
class-es, readings, citations and
brief talks.
Hebrew Parochial School
To Hold Commencement
Commencement exercises of
the Detroit Hebrew Parochial
School will take place at 1:30
p. m. Sunday, June 15, in the li-
brary of Yeshivath Chachmey
Lublin, Linwood at Elmhurst.
Elementary and high school di-
plomas will be presented to the
graduates. The graduates will
speak and present vocal selec-
tions.
Dr. Kallet Named Beth El Presiden
Nate Shapero Chosen Vice-Preside
Dr. Herbert I. Kallett was elect-
ed the 29th president of Temple
Beth El at the 97th annual dinner
meeting on May 26. Other officers
elected are:
Nate S. Shapero, vice-president,
and Harry S. Grant, treasurer.
The following were elected
trustees for a three year term:
Ralph A. Mayes; Leon S. Way-
burn, David Wilkus and Julian
G. Wolfner. Walter S. Heaven-
rich was elected an honorary trus-
tee. Trustees whose term does
not expire are: Sidney J. Allen,
Sylvan Grosner, Harry A. Hy-
man, Henry Levitt, Lawrence J.
Michelson, David M. Welling,
Joseph M. Welt, and Benjamin
Wilk.
The following will serve as ex-
officio members: Mrs. Maurice
Klein, president of the Sister-
hood, Arthur L. Goulson, presi-
dent of the Men's Club, and
Leonard T. Lewis, the retiring
president of the Temple.
The New Officers
Dr. Kallet, a prominent physic-
ian, has been affiliated with
Temple Beth El for the past 26
years and has served the con-
gregation as chairman of the
Cemetery Board, trustee, vice-
president and chairman of the
Religious School committee. He
is chief of the department of
proctology at Harper Hospital
and associate professor and head
of the proctology department at
Wayne University College of
Medicine.
Mr. Shapero, president of Cun-
ningham's and Shapero Stores,
one of the outstanding Jewish
community and civic leaders of
Detroit, has been affiliated with
Temple Beth El since 1925 and
has served as a member of the
board or many years.
Mr. Grant, president of Grant
Iron and Metal Company, a well
known leader in the community,
has been affiliated with Temple
Beth El for 32 years, -serving as
trustee, chairman of the wayr, and
means committee and treasurer
for the past two years.
Reports by Lewis and Dr. Glazer
Mr. Lewis, the outgoing presi-
dent, stated in his annual report
that the past season in the con-
gregation witnessed an active pro-
gram in all departments, and
that the membership is now over
1400, the largest in its history and
one of the largest in the country.
He was presented with a citation
by Dr. B. Benedict Glazer, on b
