Christian and Jewish organizations, including many
civic and labor movements, are mobilizing forces in Detroit
to support the Stratton Bill which calls for the admission into
this country of 400,000 displaced persons over a period of
four years.
Sponsored by Rep. John Stratton, (R), Congressman..
at-Large from Illinois, this measure has the backing of
President Truman, the Justice and State Departments.
The Administration has made its position dear in two
favorable memoranda to the House Judiciary Committee
from the Justice and State Departments.

With hearings on the Stratton Bill scheduled to corn-
mence on June 4. the Michigan
Committee on Displaced Per-
sons has undertaken to organize
widespread sentiment in this
state for the measure. Coordi-
nation of the state's activities in
favor of this bill win be effected
at a public meeting to be held
at 8 p.m. next Wednesday eve-
ning at the Rackham Audi-
tgrium, with Earl G. Harrison,
national chairman of the
Citizens Committee on Dis-
placed Persons, speaking on the
subject "Displaced Persons: A
Challenge to America."
Admission to the meeting will
be free to the public.
EARL G. HARRISON
Oscar Cohen, executive direc-
for of the Jewish Community Council, one of the organizations
active in arranging this meeting and in unifying efforts in
support of the Stratton Bill, (H.R. 2910), pointed out this week
that the CIO, AFL, Council of Jewish Women, National
Catholic Welfare Council, Detroit Council of Churches,
NAACP, non-sectarian, Polish, Ukrainian and Czech groups
are supporting efforts in behalf of the bill.
Strong Sentiment Among All Denominations
An active role in behalf of the measure is being played
by the League of Women Voters, whose recently elected presi-
dent, Mrs. Isidore Sobeloff, reports strong sentiment among
all denominations in Detroit in favor of the admission to
this country of 400,000 displaced persons.
In a call to organizations affiliated with the Jewish Com-
munity Council to cooperate in assuring an overflow audience
for the meeting on May 28 to be addressed by Mr. Harrison,
Aaron Droock, Council president, stated: _
"The moral and humanitarian obligations to the innocent
victims of Nazi aggression is manifest. The support of Detroit's
Jewish community should be completely and solidly behind
this great effort to offer haven to a reasonable number of
Europe's homeless. The enactment of this proposed legislation
would be in keeping with one of the traditions which has con-
tributed to America's greatness."
Authority on Problem of Displaced Persons
In addition to serving as chairman of the Citizens COM-
mittee on Displaced Persons, Mr. Harrison was formerly U. S.
Commissioner of Immigration and Naturalization and U. S.

We Reared Ourselves a Monument

By DR. NOAH E. ARONSTAM

Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone,

A tried stone, a costly cornerstone of sure foundation.

—Isaiah 28:16

We reared ourselves a Monument
Of Titan's task a throne;
No marble wrought in majesty
Rose skywards to proclaim our fame,
Nor burnished gold on stone
Burst forth, emblazoning our name.

We reared ourselves a Hermitage
Of sleepless night that brought
Us restless days of futile strife;
We tilled and toiled, we fought and foiled
With untold dangers fraught—
Our vanguard held the foe recoiled.

We reared ourselves a Hermitage,
Yet many times we wept;
Our pillows drenched in midnight dreams
By shadows of the sable night
As on our couch we slept,
Midst weary vigil, lurking fright.

And thus the epigraph be writ
Upon the marble's rim:
"Lo, golden shines the rising sun
In radiance on Carmel's dome;
And though the dawn be dim:
Yell live to see the Promised Home.

Your Monument shall rise again
In splendor as of yore;
The time is here, the hour is near
To greater effort to unfold:
There is hope for us in store."

SUCH RUNS THE RUNE OUR PROPHETS TOLD.

The Jewish News dedicates this issue
to the Confirmands and Consecrants
of the Detroit congregations and to
the graduates of our religious and
community schools.
