Solemn Atmosphere Marks Triennial Parley
Of Bnai Brith; U. S. Officials Get Awards
WASHINGTON. — TreMendous
gains in membership and service
to -the nation highlighted all re-
ports to the more than 400 dele-
gates who assembled here at the
triennial convention of Bnai Brith
May 11-14.
In a solemn atmosphere due to
the--death of Henry Monsky, pres-
ident of Bnai Brith, who died nine
days prior to the convention, the
delegates mapped an intensified
drive for continued service in
the future.
The chairmanship of the var-
ious sessions was divided among
vice presidents Frank Goldman,
Lowell, Mass.; Harry K. Wolff,
San Francisco; A. B. Freyer,
Shreveport, La. and Sidney G.
Kusworm, Dayton, 0., treasurer.
President's Report
The report of the president was
given by Mr. Goldman, who paid
tribute to Mr. Monsky's memory.
Maurice Bisgyer, secretary, em-
phasized Bnai Brith's overseas
program "runs the gamut of as-
sistance to our people abroad,
the rehabilitation of Bnai Brith
lodges and members and the In-
stitution of new units in many
parts of the world. Foreign lodges
have been organized and reor-
ganized in 27 countries through-
out the world."
Reports from the seven men's
Bnai Bri Lb districts in the U. S.
and Canada, and from Harry
Brager of Washington, national
membership director, revealed
that, as of Jan. 1, the member-
ship strength of Bnai Brith men
totalled over 200,000 in 812
lodges. Coupled with this was a
report from Mrs. Arthur G. Lauf-
man, Chicago, national director
of women's activities, which in-
dicated that the women's side of
the Order had grown to a mem-
bership of more than 95,000 in
466 women's chapters.
1,200 Youth Chapters
Rabbi Amram Prero, national
director of Bnai Brith Youth Or-
ganization, reported there are
now 1,200 BBYO units in 285
communities located in the U. S.,
Canada, England, China, Aus-
tralia, France and Palestine with
an aggregate membership of 29,-
028 young people.
Dr. A. L. Sacher, national
Hillel director, reported that the
Counselorships had kept pace
with the tremendous post war
increase in college registrations.
There are now 66 full-time Foun-
dations and 101 Counselorships,
making a total of 167 Hillel units
in the U. S. and Canada. -

through existing units and through
the organization of new Young
Men's Lodges, is now under way.

Department, revealed Bnai Brith
had been enrolled_ in such major
projects as the Serve-A-Hospital
Program, camp and hospital acti-
vities in this country and Can-
ada, furnishing religious equip-
ment for Jewish services at Vet-
erans Hospitals, the National Vet-
erans Emergency Housing Pro-
gram and the "Employ the Phy-
sically Handicapped" project.

in Palestine; are supporting the
UNESCO program for rehabili-
tation of European Education; as-
sisting the handicapped, both vet-
erans and non-veterans, to obtain
suitable jobs; extended the Wo-
men's Supreme Council scholar-
ships program to enable gifted
young people to obtain further
schooling in Jewish subjects
launched a campaign of educati:n
urging all War Bond holders to
retain -their bonds as a measure
against inflation; cooperated in
community projects on juvenile
crime.
