woman accused some of the Jews
of beating her, whereupon the
soldiers commenced beating the
DPs. The noise of the clash at-
tracted other military policemen ,
and when several of the Jews
attempted to escape, they were
fired upon. None of the shots
found their mark.

Trample on Bibles

Meanwhile the German woman
beat several of the Jews and
shouted anti-Semitic epithets.
She also trampled several Bibles
and prayer shawls.
When military police officers
arrived they halted the assaults
and ordered the soldiers to leave.
They permitted the Jews who had
been forced to stand against a
wall with their arms in the air
for a considerable time to lower
them and rest.

`Blow Off Steam'

It is learned that at last week's
meetings between the High Com-
missioner and David Ben Gurion
and between Chief Secretary
• Gurney and Goldie Meirson, the
government officials warned in
the event of further proclama-
tions of martial law the military
would not be responsible for the
welfare of the Jews. Persistent
rumors credit the military au-
thorities with threatening to let
the troops "blow off steam" in the
event of further violence.
Meanwhile, the Stern Group,
which admitted responsibility for
the assassination in Haifa of A. E.
Conquest, acting chief of the
Criminal Investigating Depart-
ment in that city, was reported
to be negotiating with an un-
named Arab group for a "united
anti-British front" The Irgun' is
also reported to be participating

in the negotiations.
An Irgun broadcast devoted to
the UN meeting warned that
peace will not come to the Middle
East until the. British withdraw
from Palestine and an independ-
ent Jewish state established.
