Senior Bicur Cholem
Celebrates 53rd Year
With Banquet Sunday

Fifty-three years ago, 32 worn-
en met in a little synagogue on
High street between Hastings and
Antoine to form an organization
that later was to become highly
respected for its humanitarian
work.
Today, the 150 active members
of Detroit Senior Bicur Cholem
continue to serve the sick and
needy.
When the group meets for its
53rd anniversary banquet, April
27, at the Bnai David, Elmhurst
and 14th, the clock will spin back
to a wedding on Elizabeth St.
when a few women happened to
talk about the terrible things go-
ing on in Europe.
From this discussion sprang the
Maternity Society. Women corn-
ing to America who needed help,
were given medical care, a baby
wardrobe, six sheets and six pil-
low cases and $7 in cash, all the
group could spare.
A year later the Maternity So-
ciety, realizing the great neces-
sity for assistance in a wider
s c op e, became Detroit Bicur
Cholem.
The first war period found them
marching down the aisles of
theaters, collecting nickels and
dimes to help invalids and vet-
erans. During World War II, they
were commended for their pa-
triotic and humanitarian interests.
Mrs. Lena Techner is marking
her 10th anniversary as presi-
dent of Bicur Cholem. Before her,
Mrs. Ida Solai had served that
office 18 years.
Rabbis Lazar Levine and Alvin
Poplack, director of Young Israel
in Detroit, and Abraham H. Jaf-
fin, executive director of Chesed
shel Emes, will speak at the ban-
quet.
