Doubling of 1946 Pledges Becomes Standard
Of Giving in the '47 Allied Jewish Campaign

Allied Jewish Campaign activities gained momentum
during the past week, when several of the campaign
divisions mobilized their forces to assure the success of_the
1947 drive for $5,335,000.
At a Passover dinner held on April 9 at the Variety
Club in Hotel Tuller, Barney Balaban, president of Para-
mount Pictures, stirred a gathering composed of repre-
sentatives of the arts and crafts, printers, publishers and
newspaper divisiohs, to action, with the result that contri-
butions totalled nearly double the amount the same people
gave last year. As against 1946 contributions amounting to
$31,320, this group gave $153,775.
Isidore Sobeloff, executive director of the campaign
and of the Jewish Welfare Federation, expressed satisfac-
tion over this result and stated that it indicates the general
trend in the campaign. Abraham Srere, who called for the

contributions, was equally as enthusiastic over the results.
At the speakers table at the dinner addressed by Mr.
Balaban were many national notables, including the Detroit
leaders.

"If you add Bevin's letter to the
London Times' naval corres-
pondent's article describing so-
called illegal immigration as
`naval gangsterism' you will get
a real picture," the spokesman
said. "Both seem to emanate from
a bad conscience. Exploiting the
distress of the refugees and the
Jewish nation is adding insult to
injury, since all the world, in-
cluding Palestine, is closed to
them. And when they take to
even bad ships, it is called a 'slave
traffic'.'

Increase Flow of Ships
Warning that the only result of
the government's action and the
various newspaper articles would
be an increased flow of ships. the
Agency official said "naturally it
would be better if we could pro-
vide better ships, but those who
have no other means necessarily
use those at hand. The sooner
Jewish immigration is legalized
the better. Otherwise such at-
tacks do not help anybody."

France and Italy
Agree to Check
Immigration

LONDON. (JTA)—France and
Italy have replied favorably to
the British government's request
for cooperation in preventing
visaless Jewish immigrants from
sailing for Palestine from their
shores. The request was made
because British officials expect
a new wave of illegal immigra-
tion with the lifting of winter
weather in the Mediterranean
Sea.
Max Intrator, arrested in
France on charges of illegal cur-
rency dealings, has denied that
he was, involved in financing the
illegal immigration of Jewish
refugees to Palestine. Headlines
in British and French newspa-
pers have attempted to link him
to the Palestine underground.
(From Ludwigshaven, Ger-
many, it was reported American
authorities had intercepted 270
displaced Jews in five railroad
coaches who were attempting to
reach Marseille where they hoped
to sail for Palestine.)
