Noted Business Leader
To Talk on Behalf of AJC And Flatow Speak for Allied Campaign
Ira A. Hirschmann, noted business executive and musician
who served as a special representative of the State Depart-
ment in Ankara, Turkey, during the war, will speak in behalf
of the Allied Jewish Campaign, at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 16,
in the Arabian Room of the Hotel Tuner. The meeting will
be sponsored by the Trades and Professional Divisions of the
Detroit Service Group.
Hirschmann was for many years
a company executive in New York
department stores and left this
field to serve as a special as-
sistant to William H. Davis, head
of the War Labor Board. Because
of his outstanding work in this
post, President Roosevelt named
him chairman of the War Refugee
Board.
Rescued Thousands
While in Ankara, Hirschmann
was personally responsible for the
rescue of thousands of Jews by
direct contact with governments
through the world. He accom-
plished this partly by negotiation
with enemy governments—nego-
tiations without precedent in
diplomatic history.
Recently returned from a
special assignment for Fiorello H.
LaGuardia for UNRRA in Europe,
Hirschmann has entered a new
field of interest, radio and tele-
vision. He is fit present owner of
a radio and television station.
In addition to his leadership in
the business and communal fields,
Hirschmann is one of the leading
musical patrons in the country.
He is one of the founders and the
president of the New Friends of
Music and is himself an accom-
plished pianist.
Dealt With Nazis
As special representative of the
Department of State on his mis-
sion of mercy as chairman of the
Vial. Refugee Board, Mr. Hirsch-
mann's instructions were to save,
if possible, Jewish and other
refugees in the Balkans.
His position exempted h i m
from provisions of the Trading
with the Enemy Act and from his
headquarters in Istanbul and
Ankara he was permitted to deal
even with the secret agents of
the Nazis, in the interests of res-
cuing lives.

mann—Page 4).

Ira A. Hirschmann's "Life Line

eminent Jewish leader describes
what he had learned in Europe as
chairman of the WRB, is de-
scribed by his publishers as fol-
lows:
"Ira A. Hirschmann is a public

not stand on protocol, he believes
in getting things done, and he
cuts through obstacles. Following

New Listeners
"As founder and president of
The New Friends of Music. he
has brought the best music within
the reach of thousands of new
listeners. During the war he
served for a time as special as-
sistant to William H. Davis on
the War Labor Board.
"What was more natural than
that Franklin D. Roosevelt should
select Mr. Hirschmann for the
tough, dangerous, heartbreaking
mission in the Middle East, just
as later Fiorello H. LaGuardia
was to choose Mr. Hirschmann to
undertake an important UNRRA
assignment in Europe? In both
cases the need was for a man of
judgment, a man of action—and
a man with a heart."
