Page Forty-Six [ Our Letter Box JWB Survey Directors OSE Workers Report Indescribable Living Conditions in Morocco To Report Conclusions Histadrut Prides Itself On Small Cost of Campaign Editor, The Jewish News: We have read with deep inter- est the letter from Mr. Goldberg relative to the recent Histadrut event. We appreciate Mr. Goldberg's genuine sympathy with the pur- poses for which the Histadrut campaigns are conducted. The Detroit Histadrut Committee has always prided itself on the small ratio of expenses incurred in con- ducting its campaigns and has avoided the use of costly dinner meetings. Careful thought was given to the program of the closing event and the expenses involved. It was only because a number of the participants freely donated their services and time to the campaign that we were able to carry through such a meaningful evening. Clarification should be made on one point raised by Mr. Goldberg. We do not believe that the ques- tion of "rewarding" the workers for their efforts was the really important reason for holding the Histadrut event. Certainly none of the workers who have given their time and energy need any ,'"reward" other than knowing that they are participating in the rebuilding of the Jewish home- land. In the eyes of the workers and organizations, their participation extends beyond raising funds. They also feel they have the re- sponsibility of bringing to Detroit Jews the story of how Palestine is being rebuilt and making known the significant role played by the Histadrut. Hundreds of Detroit Jews from all walks of life attended the weekly Histadrut rallies. We feel confident that they heard more than "pep" speeches, that their lives as American Jews are richer for their participation in these Meetings and they have a deeper feeling of identification with the builders and defenders of Jewish Palestine. It was in this spirit that the Histadrut event was planned. The large number of Detroit .Jews who attended the event (and the many who were-unable to get in) indicates conclusively the need of Detroit Jews for a real Pales- tinian educational and cultural evening. The work of our Halutzim con- tinues throughout the year. The task of building a Jewish home- land does not begin or stop with the formal opening or closing of fund-raising activities. The thoughtful suggestion of Mr. Goldberg that admission be charged to future Histadrut eve- nings certainly deserves the ser- ious consideration of the cam- paign executive board. SALO BARON, pro- fessor of history at Columbia University, chairman of the JWB Survey Commission. NEW YORK—Among the 40,000 Jews crowded together in the "Mellah" (ghetto) of Casablanca, there are not less than 12,000 children under 14 years of age. There are no words suitable to describe the miserable living con- ditions in these quarters. Families of eight, nine and often 10 per- sons live huddled together in in- adequate space. This was report- ed by Dr. Valentine Cremer and Maurice Brener, members of the executive board of OSE-Union, who recently returned from an inspection tour in Morocco. The majority of the "Mellah" children are physically so back- ward, that one and a half year olds look like babies of six months, and are too weak to walk. There are many children who have become blind, being affected with trachoma and other eye- diseases. Nearly 60 percent of all children are afflicted with scab- ies. Contributing to this are crowd- ed rooms, the complete lack of underwear and insufficiency of clothing, which consists of nothing but rags. Sixty-five hundred of the 12,000 children receive no schooling whatsoever. Only 56 beds of the "Jules Moran" hos- pital are at the disposal of the 70,000 Jews living in Casablanca and in no other hospital arc Jews allowed to enter. GREETINGS ACTIVE METALS CO.
