Hopes of an easing up on British military operations in
Palestine faded this week when it was announced in London
that a "get tough" policy will be continued on a long-term
basis.
The continuation of this policy was decided upon during
last week's London conferences between Lt. Gen. Sir Alan

Counts to Settle Disputes

Under the legislation, which
will benefit 15,000 Jews in the
U.S. zone and thousands in other
countries, as well as non-Jewish
persecutees, applications must be
filed before Dec. 31, 1948.
Where there is a dispute as to
ownership, special German tri-
bunals will decide the issues.
Persons who try to hide property

Doubts Agency Will Be Able
To Participate in UN Debate
LAKE SUCCESS, (JTAY—Re-
vealing he had conferred unof-
ficially with a representative of
the Jewish Agency on the ques-
tion of the United Nations action
on Palestine, UN Secretary-Gen.
Trygve Lie said he doubted that
Jewish organizations would be
able to present their case directly
when the Palestine question is
formally placed before the Gen-
eral Assembly.
He stressed this did not mean,
the Jewish groups would be
barred from offering testimony.,
suggesting they perhaps could be
heard by a committee appointed
to gather all ---ertinent informa-1
tion on the problem.
The World Jewish Congress and
the Consultative Council of Jew-
ish Organizations — consisting of
the American Jewish Committee,
the Anglo-Jewish Association and
the Alliance Israelite Universelle
—were granted consultative status
by the UN Economic and Social
Council.
The application of the Jewish
Agency was denied on the basis
that it was not an internal organ-
ization. Its application will be
considered at the Council's next
session.
Mr. Lie announced that he has
dropped his plan to send a fact-
finding commission to Palestine
prior to a discussion of the prob-
lem in the General Assembly.
Addressing the opening session
of the UN Trusteeship Council,
Mr. Lie touched briefly upon the
Palestine issue. Pointing out .tRat
• it was among a,,number of non-
self - governing territories for
which no trusteeship agreement
had been submitted to the Coun-
cil, he said: "It seems probable
the question of the future status
of Palestine will come before the
United Nations at an early date."

Agency Rejected British Barter
Of 100,000 Certificates
TEL AVIV, (JPS-PALCOR)—
Moshe Shertok disclosed here the
Jewish Agency had rejected a
British offer of 100,000 immigra-
tion certificates on the condition
that the Agency first recognize
the Arabs' right to veto any fur-
ther immigration after the 100,000
„are admitted. "No nation could
agree to sacrifice her future for
. a small palliative in the present,:'
he said.
Shertok said the Yishuv is con-
fronted with the fact British
policy seeks to liquidate Zionism.
