Fred M. Butzel Chosen to Head
Detroit's Drive for $5,335,000

Announcement by Julian H. Krolik, president of
the Jewish welfare Federation of Detroit, of the selec-
tion of Fred M. Butzel as general chairman of the 1947
`Allied Jewish Campaign for $5,335,000, brought forth
enthusiasm reflecting the affection and admiration in
which the community's outstanding leader is held here.
Mr. Krolik's announcement was made Tuesday
night at a meeting of 200 of the larger contributors to
the campaign, at a dinner meeting at Hotel Statler. In
hs announcement, Mr. Krolik said of Mr. Butzel:
"Although he will be 70 this summer (Aug.
25), he has been self-sacrificing in accepting this
responsibility in our largest campaign."
Commenting upon the outburst of applause with
which the gathering gave approval to the selection of
Mr. Butzel for the drive's chairmanship and at the
same time honored him for his many years of service
On the evekf the second Passover since the end of the war in Europe, hundreds of thousands
of Europe's Jewish survivors, including many yo ungsters like the two above, are still homeless,
hungry and alone. The Jews of America, who hold the key to the future of the 1,500,000 Jews still
alive on the Continent, have the opportunity in I 947 to provide for their redemption through the
$170.000,000 campaign of the United Jewish A ppeal. In Detroit. the Allied Jewish Campaign
for $5,335,000 is now under way. The relief, re habilitation and resettlement programs of the
Joint Distribution Committee, United Palestine A ppeal and the United Service for New Americans
will insure a happier Passover for Europe's Jews n ext year.
to Jewry and to America. Mr. Krolik said:
He merits the applause we gave him, but we must back
it up by deeds to put the campaign across, to show him that
the Jewish community appreciates what he has done and
to make his 70th birthday celebration a memorable one."
The gathering greeted with equal enthusiasm the ah-
Tiouncement that one of the major tasks in the drive—the
chairmanship of the Special Gifts Division—was accepted by
Maurice Aronsson. "No task is too tough for him to tackle,"
was Mr. Krolik's tribute to indefatigable Maury Aronsson.
"If we work together," Mr. Krolik said, "there will be no
obstacles to complete success in our cooperative efforts."
Mr. Butzel, in a brief response to the, moving tributes paid
to him, said it was the nicest birthday celebration he had ever
had. In his appeal for the drive he coined the maxim that "a
really generous man is one who owns his money but whose
money does not own him."
The enthusiasm with which the formation of the cam-
paign machinery was acclaimed found evidence in an un-
precedented response — contributions totalling nearly
$900,000 made by those present. In his comment upon this
liberal response, Isidore Sobeloff, director of the drive and
of the Federation, pointed out that the entire income of
the lest Allied Jewish Campaign prior to the War Chest—
