Weekly exposing the false claims
on immigration of Peter Berg-
son's Free Palestine League may
need a follow up in view of the
fuss that the League is making
over their "showboat," the SS
Ben Hecht, which finally arrived
in Haifa last week.
We can now expect a flood of
effeclive ads, written by highly
paid advertising talent implying
that the Bergson group has many
more ships ready to take refugees
to Palestine and asking the read-
ers for donations. Many gullible
people will, as in the past, fall
for these misleading advertise-
ments. and send them their dona-
tions.
The truth is that the Bergson
group has been collecting money
through these advertisements and
other inethkxis for the stated
purpose of rescuing refugees
since it founded the Emergency
Committee to Save the Jews of
Europe some five years ago. The
Emergency Committee was not
registered with the President's
War Refugee Board where it
would have had to submit a
Pr'
financial statement and all ef-
forts to obtain a statement of
their collections and disburse-
ments from the Bergson office
have failed. We can safely esti-
mate. however, that the collec-
tions of the Emergency Commit-
tee over a period of three or four
years together with the $325,000
which Bergson's Free Palestine
League has announced that it has
forwarded to an un-named re-
patriation commission in Europe,
must amount to over one million
duila rs.
Out of this million dollars col-
lected from American Jews for
the purpose of rescuing refugees
from Europe, the announced ex-
penditures on refugees has been
$36,000 for the purchase of the
SS Ben Hecht and probably an-
other $100,000 for its outfitting
and the expenses of the trip to
Palestine.
As this is the first boat which
the Bergson group has brought
to Palestine, this,js all that they
have spent on refugees. Where
the rest of the money has gone.
we can only guess. We have some
evidence from the fact that simi-
lar collections have been carried
on in South Africa. When ques-
tioned on the disbursement of
the funds, one of the heads of
the group there said, "We spent
it on propaganda. So what?"
While the Bergson group have
been placing their advertisements
in the press, the Haganah has
brought to Palestine over 25
shiploads in the past 14 months.
The Haganah makes it a practice
of taking off the crew members
before the ship enters the Pales-
tine territorial waters since en-
gineers and seamen are valuable
personnel. There are other Ha-
ganah ships waiting to be manned
and more refugees waiting to be
rescued. Since the League has no
other boat except the Ben Hecht
at the present time, the crew
was no' taken off. Their arrest by
the British is more grist for the
League's publicity mill.
Despite these undeniable facts,
the Bergson group will, no doubt,
continue to confuse the American
puWic, Ben Hecht will write an-
other play: and another million
dollars or more will be collected
from gullible Jews who should
be giving their money to those
who are actually rescuing refu-
' gees from the European helL No
doubt, if we wait long enough
(I hope not another five years)
a small portion of the collected
money will be donated towards a
second "showboat," Ben Hecht TI.
