March 17 Designated 'Jewish Day' At Flower Show

Palestine .Film, Organ Music
will Augment Floral Exhibit

Jewish National Fund Sponsors Palestine Garden Which
Features Plants, Flowers Flown from Holy Land; Show
Opens March 15 at Convention Hall

. ,Monday, March 17, • has been designated as Jewish Day at
the annual Michigan Flower Show.
Sponsored by the Michigan Horticultural Society, at De-
troit Convention Hall, for a period of nine days starting
Saturday, March 15, and Concluding Sunday, March 23, this
year's show will feature 10 "United Nations Gardens," includ-
ing a special Palestine Garden which has been prepared by
the Jewish National Fund Council of Detroit.
Features of "Jewish Day" will include-
• The showing of a Palestine movie, "A Day in Dagania";

• Special displays of Palestine flowers and plants, and
• A special Hebraic musical program, featuring Jason
Tickton, organist of Temple Beth El.
The film will be shown three times, with five minute

intermissions, from ' to 8 p.m. Monday. Tickton will provide
Jewish music on the organ during the evening.

for the show via trans-Atlantic
plane from the Holy Land.
Alex Schreier, treasurer of
the Jewish National Fund Coun-
cil of Detroit, heads the com
mittee which had charge of
arrangements for the Palestine
Garden.
The 20 by 30 foot garden will
feature a circular flower bed cen-
tered about an inlaid table bear-
. Ang,:,a -tray with the soil flown
froth the Holy Land. • A back- .
ground of blue skies, palm trees
and tropical foliage will set off
the photographic murals depict-
ing Palestine's metamorphosis
from arid, eroded land to a flour-
ishing agricultural community.
The completed garden will be
a replica of the formal garden at
the School of Agriculture in Pe-
• tach Tikvah. Palestine, according
to Hrand Hampikian, supervising
architect for the United Nations
section. Louis G. Redstone is the
architeCtural consultant ?or the
Palestine exhibit.
Palestinian objects loaned to
the Flower Show for use in the
Palestine garden include statuary,'
from Walter Herz, 10305 Dexter,
and furniture and objets d'art,
from Mrs. Charles Milan, 16885
Princeton.
Mrs. Philip' Cutler and Mrs.
Philip - Slomovitz are co-chairmen
of the committee in charge of
hostesses, who will be present;
daily at the exposition to explain,
the display and the Palestine;
Garden. Hostesses have been se-I
lected from all women's Zionist,
groups in Detroit.

Young Zionists Form
Political Action Unit

Plans are being formulated. for
the establishment of a Young
Zionist Actions Committee for the
Detroit area.
In cooperation with the De-
troit Zionist Emergency Council,
YZAC will pursue an intensified
course of political action, center-
ing against British policy and
tactics in Palestine.
All Zionist and Jewish groups
in the city are invited to partici-

Bet Habonim, a project of the
Labor Zionist Youth Movement,
is to benefit from the annual
Passover Third Sedar at the
Jewish Center, April 6.
Bet Habonim, planned to be
an International Educational In-
stitute in Naame, Palestine, will
be similar to the present Habon-
im Seminary in New York City.

Habonim will take an extensive
six-month course of study in
labor, Zionism, Hebrew, Pales-
tinian life and culture. Later,
they will spend six months tour-
ing the country to get a first
customs,
hand knowledge of
habits and practical life of the
people. Upon their return to
their respective countries they
will act as organizers and leaders
of Habonim movements.
The Third Seder program will
include a modern Hagadah page-
ant. original Palestinian dances
and Halutzi songs. The dance
group is being prepared by Avis-
I hag Hirsch. Palestinian delegate

On Student and Zionism

Using as its clarion call "Beat
Bevin," scores of Detroit Jews
are being enlisted in the cam-
paign of the Zionist Organiza-
tion of Detroit to enlist unaffil-
iated Detroiters in the Zionist
movement.
Dr. Philip E. Lachman. chair-
man of the ZOD membership
committee, has issued a call for
more workers. Expressing satis-
faction with results attained thus
far. he stater}: "By having a nu-
merically strong and united body
of Jewry in America supporting
the valiant efforts of Palestine's
Jews we can strike a telling
blow at the heartless tyranny of
the British Foreign Secretary
and give strong support to our
own government in its cham-
pionship of Jewish rights in Pal-
estine."
Oscar J. Kritzer of the na-
tional ZOA office, who is direct-
ing the drive in Detroit, has
called upon Detroit Jews for a
hearty response to the drive
which will conclude with "Z
Day" on Sunday, March 23. Hun-
dreds of Zionists are expected to
meet at breakfast that day and
then will proceed, acting as
"Minute Men and Women" in
teams of two to visit Jewish
homes and to enroll new Zionist
members. The drive will con-
clude with a public meeting on
March 24. Between now and
March 23, Mr. Kritzer invites the
cooperation of the entire com-
munity in support of the mem-
bership campaign.

Tickton Hits High Note in Detroit's
Religious, Secular Music Circles

Visitors to the Detroit Flower Show next Monday evening will
view the Palestine Garden and other exhibits to the accompaniment
.of a special program of Jewish music, in honor of Jewish Day at the

a major role in religious and secular music circles in Detroit—
Jason H. Tickton.

distinct honor of being named among the nationality groups to sponsor
the Palestine Garden at the Annual Flower Show, at Convention Hall,
March 15 to 23.
Much effort has been put into the arrangements for the Palestine
Garden, which will be one of 10 United Nations Gardens at the Flower
