WASHINGTON, D. C. PTA)--Presidenf Truman, receiving 25
United Jew _ ish Appeal leaders headed by former Gov. Herbert H.
- Lehman and former Secretary of the Treasury Henry
Morgerithau Jr:, said:
"The situation you are dealing with is terrible. We
have 247X100 Jewish refugees in the American zone in
Germany. We have been trying to arrange to get
100,000 into Palestine. We are still endeavoring to get
that job done."

Commenting upon the mission of the Jewish leaders to Wash-
ington at the National Conference for the 1947 $170,000,000 UJA

drive, President Truman declared:
"In your effort to alleviate the plight of the victims of Hitlerism
and to place them on the road to recovery, you are performing tasks
which will contribute to the reconstruction of the countries and the
peoples shattered by the, war, and to the re-establishment of a greater
sense of comradeship and cooperation among all men."

Eisenhower's Speech Spurs Campaign
For $170 000 000 By United Jewish Appeal

WASHINGTON, D. C.--General of the Army Dwight D.
Eisenhower, Chief of Staff of the U. S. Army, Sunday
launched the largest single humanitarian endeavor in the
history of the U. S. when he told the National Conference of
the $170,000,000 United Jewish Appeal that "enlightened self-
. interest demands the elimination of the unfair practices

It was announced at the meet-
ing that one $1,000,000 gift, one
of $500,000 and several ranging

already been received by the

was given by members of the
family of the late Julius Rosen-

William Rosenwald, 7VIrs. David
M. Lew, Mrs. Max Ascoli and
Mr. and Mrs. Edgar B. Stern.
Edmund I. Kaufman, of Washing-
ton, D. C., gave the $500,000
donation.
Dr. Israel Goldstein, national
chairman of the UJA and of the
United Palestine Appeal, said the
"task of rebuilding the shattered
lives of the thousands of Euro-
pean refugees entering Palestine
