Singing 'Ever Since I Can Remember'

Forced To .Bankruptcy

`American Jewish Culture'
Goal of Shirley Subar

Hebrew music has been receiving increasing attention in Detroit
because of the efforts of talented Shirley Subar, who says she has
been playing and singing "ever since I can remember."
She recently has been devoting-s,
her energies almost entirely to
the music that has been tradition-
al in Jewish history.
- After she' was graduated from
Wayne University's School of Mu-
sic in 1943, Miss Subar taught in
the Detroit Public Schools but
left the public school system in
order to help "develop a true
American Jewish culture."

New Jewish Culture

American Jews have developed
no music of their own, according
to Miss Subar, who hopes to
contribute to a "new Jewish cul-
ture based on that which is tra-
ditional and yet that which is
new." Implementing this dream,
she has been working principally
with young people and is now di-
recting choral groups for the
Jewish Center and the Junior
Service Group.
Miss Subar's background has
prepared her both in music and
Hebrew for work in Hebrew mu-
sic. She is a graduate of the
United Hebrew -Schools and later
taught in a Hebrew school in
Cincinnati and at the Jewish
Teachers College in the same city,
where she gave a course in music.
