Elchanan Ross Writes of Helping
Establish Kibbutz on Barren Hill

Herzl's Kin Leaves
Article on-Zionism

Elchanan Ross, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Morris , Ross of 4211 Tuxedo,
who is studying at the Hebrew
University in Jerusalem under
the GI Bill of Rights, in a letter
to his parents this week described
the development of a new colony
near Hebron, -25 miles from Jeru-
salem. _
Pointing out that 25 Americans
were invited to join in the ven-
ture and that he was among them,
he wrote:
"In the afternoon we traveled
to Kfar Etzion, a Kibbutz of
Happoel "Hamizrachi. We did
some work in the afternoon un-
loading and loading trucks. At
midnight we went to sleep and
at 4 a: m. we were up ready to
move. A caravan of trucks start-
ed out for the place about three

"The thing had been well or-
ganized—everyone knew his job.
The trucks were unloaded and
sent back for more supplies. The
squads started their work on
buildings, tents, water tanks,
showers, and the usual barbed
wire fence. And in the evening
there it was: a new Kibbutz
standing and ready to carry on.
"From there one can see Tel
Aviv and the Sea miles and miles
away.
"The new settlers are Palestin-
ian-born members of Hashomer
Hatzair, 18-19 years old, and num-
bering about 70 people. They
have to clear tons of stones off
the ground before they can culti-

real debt to amateur racers.
"Their genius for speed and en-
gineering was invaluable to our
armed forces," he emphasizes.
After graduating from the Uni-
versity of Southern California's
Department of Cinematography
it took Julian seven years to be-
come a producer. His first posi-
tion was as screen writer for a
16 mm. film company. Next, a
year in the technicolor labora-
tory; then a year in Detroit, with
Loew's, Inc., MGM's distribution
organization. From 1942 to '46
he was Columbia's idea man.
Paradoxically, Ruth and Julian
met in Hollywood and discov-
ered they didn't have a single
mutual acquaintance in Detroit.
But when they were wed in Los
Angeles, in 1943, members of
both families were on hand.
