Sun Life of Canada
Discloses Increase
In 1946 Business

MONTREAL. - More people
purchased life assurance f r o m
the §un Life Assurance Co. of
Canada during 1946 than in any
similar period in the last 15 years.

Arthur B. Wood, president, out-
lined the world-wide character of
the company's business and re-

vealed many records of achieve-
ment when presenting the finan-
cial statement at the 76th annual
meeting here.
Sun Life first extended its op-
erations outrde of Canada 67
years ago, and has been estab-
lished in the U.S. and Great Brit-
ain for over half a century.

Mr. Wood stated the volume of
new life assurance business for
the year had increased by 44 per

cent over 1945 and amounted to
$348455,491, bringing total assur-
ances in force to $3,573,132,753.
This amount was distributed

among the company's territorial
divisions as follows: Canada, 32
per cent; U.S., 42 per cent; Great
Britain, 12 per cent; other coun-
tries, 14 per cent.
Of the new business in 1946,
$124,547,087 or 35.8 per cent was
secured in the U.S. Total assets
of the company reached $1,343,-
132,974.
The increased scale adopted
last year for the distribution of
dividends to policyholders will be
continued.

VIENNA (JTAI-The Austrian
Parliament passed the "Second"
and "Third Restitution Laws"
providing for the return of Nazi-
looted property now in the hands

of the Austrian government and

property seized by the Nazis
which was later sold to private
individuals who are still in pos-
session.
Edward Ludwig, president of

the parliament, announced 26,000
applications already have been
made for the return of property
formerly owned by Jews and
non-Jews.

Labor Committee Objects
To Schuschnigg Welcome

NEW YORK.-Dissent with the
]reception accorded former Chan-
cellor Kurt von Schuschnigg
upon his arrival in this country
was voiced by the Jewish Labor
Committee. The fact that Herr
von Schuschnigg spent seven
years as a prisoner of the Nazis
does not make him a hero of de-
mocracy and his precise role in
Austrian politics at the time of
Hitler's rise to power must not be
forgotten, according to Adolph
Held, national chairman of the
Labor Committee.

Perwein's Celebrates
25th Anniversary in
Bakery Business Feb. 18

Twenty-five years of growth
and success will be celebrated by
Perwein's Pastry Shop, 9144
Twelfth St., Tuesday, Feb. 18,
with an open house.
Mrs. Hedwig. Peritz and Mrs.
Rose Weinberger founded the
business in 1922. They decided
to join their names and their
energies to open the Perwein
Pastry Shop in its present loca-
tion. Many of the original em-
ployees are still with the organ-
ization.
A branch was established in
Neumann's Market, 25 E. Grand
River, in 1934, for downtown
shoppers.
The business is now operated
by Mrs. Peritz and her son, Her-
bert.
Perwein's have introduced and
made popular many specialities in
breads, rolls, cakes and coffee
cakes. Special orders for wed-
ding and birthday cakes are ac-
cepted.
"We invite all our customers
and friends to come to our birth-
day party Feb. 18", said Mrs.
Peritz.
