Synagogues to Mark
Red Cross Sabbath
On Saturday, Feb. 22

Synagogues throughout the
country will mark Feb. 22 as
Red Cross Sabbath, in accord-
ance with custom established
early during the war. This date
was determined by the Syna-
gogue Council of America co-
operating with the American
Red Cross, the latter organiza-
tion has announced. Protestant
and Catholic churches will ob-
serve Feb. 23 as Red Cross Sun-
day.
Since the beginning of the war
in 1939 more than 75,000,000 per-
sons in war-torn countries have
received assistance in the form
of clothing,'" food and medicine
valued at approximately $152,-
000.000, through the American
Red Cross overseas emergency
relief program.
In addition more than 9,000,-
000 prisoner of was food parcels,
declared surplus at war's end,
were distributed by the Red
Cross to displaced persons, or-
phanages, and other institutions
in war-devasted countries. In-
cluded in the clothing distribut-
ed overseas were more than 30,-
000,000 garments and other. ar-
ticles made by Red Cross chapter
volunteers throughout the Unit-
ed States.
Red Cross Sabbath will herald
approach of the 1947 Red Cross
Fund campaign which will be
conducted in March. A fund of
$60 000 000 is to be raised., the
minimum amount needed for the

at the Fort Wayne Hotel.

Temple Israel as a feature of the
1947 Brotherhood celebration.
Rev. Cole will occupy the pul-
pit of Temple Israel at its Sab-
bath eve services in the lecture
hall of the Detroit Ins.titute of
Arts, at 8:30 p. m. Friday. His
subject will be "The World War
Against Intolerance". At this
service, Arnold Stark, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Henry Stark, will cele-
brate his Bar Mitzvah.
Rabbi Leon Fram occupied the
Rev. Cole's pulpit Sunday, Feb. 9,
when he spoke on the subject
"Brotherhood — Pa t t e r-n f o r
Peace".
Rev. Cole became nationally
famous several years ago when
he delivered radio broadcasts in
reply to Charles Coughlin's anti-
Semitic broadcasts. He is a
member of the Board of the Na-
tional Conference of Christian
and Jews. a member of the
American Palestine Committee,
and a nationally eminent cham-
pion of the rights of minority
groups.
