Courageous French Maquis
Establish Palestine Settlement
In the hills west of Jerusalem
there is a boundary line, Mount
Haruah, which challenged Pales-
tine's Jews for 10 years. When it
finally was rossed, recently, the
pioneers were Jewish youths
from . France, former resistance
fighters of the Maquis, the first
of their kind to settle in Pales-
tine.
The sloping sides of Mount
Haruah are green *now with a
young forest, butthe forest it-
self is rooted in trfigedy. On a
morning in the winter of 1937,
five young men from a neighbor-
ing village set out to plant a
forest for the Jewish National
Fund. As they reached Haruah,
where their work lay, fire was
Opened on them from ambush

mourning enveloped Palestine's
Jewish community and from that
day Mount Haruah is associated
in people's minds with the mem-
ory of the five victims.
Western Boundary
Their comrades have since
built a village on the opposite
hill and have named it Maaleh
Hahamishah, meaning in Hebrew,
"The Ascent of the Five." For
years Mount Haruah was the

JDC Leader Says
PARIS, (JTA)—Disclosing the
number of children born in the
Jewish DP camps in Germany
and Austria since the end of the
war exceeded the number of per-
sons who have emigrated, Dr. Jo-
seph Schwartz, European direc-
tor of the *Point Distribution
Committee, said that provision
must be made for the immigra-
tion to Palestine and elsewhere
of 250,000 Jews.
Speaking at a press conference
following the closing of a week-
long conference here of JDC rep-
resentatives from 17 countries,
Dr. Schwartz stressed that when
UNRRA ceases operations at the
end of June, the JDC will be
forced to assume heavier bur-
dens, particularly in the interim
period between the liquidation
of UNRRA and the beginning of
operations by the projected In-
ternational Refugee Organization.
The JDC director said 60 per
cent of the Jewish population in
Europe was directly supported by
his organization, but that an ef-
fort is now being made to gradu-
ally replace relief by reconstruc-
tion.
Leo Schwarz, JDC representa-
tive in Germany, reported 130,-

tion dimmed, he warned.

Henry Monsky, national presi-
dent, said the over-all program
will be delegated to the Bnai
Brith National Post War Ser-
rice-Americanism Department.
Nursed Back to Health
In Palestine they came under
the wing of the Jewish Agency
and its rehabilitation and reset-
tlement program, financed by the
United Palestine Appeal. Several
of them, suffering from malnu-
trition, required special diets to
nurse them back to health. They
then went into agricultural train-
ing at Dagania B and thereafter
set up a temporary camp of their
Building a settlement in Pales-
tine is not easy, the most difficult
being the hill section, where 40
or 50 working days are required
merely to prepare the land for
cultivation by clearing it of
boulders and stones.
However,
the young settlers have before
them the example of Kiryath
Anavirn•and Maaleh Hahamishah,
which are now busy, productive
villages, capable of absorbing
many newcomers.

Europe's Children Have
Eagerness For New Life,
Says JDC Psychiatrist
NEW YORK—Jewish children,
who endured a decade of horror
under Hitler, yearn today for love
and affection and show an "amaa-
ing vitality and eagerness to
build useful, happy lives," ac-
cording to Dr. Paul Friedman,
noted psychiatrist, who returned
last week after a six-months'
stay for the Joint Distribution
Committee in Europe.
Dr. Friedman expressed the
opinion that "the Jewish bdys
and girls who lived through
Nazism are not mentally sick.
Many of them present emo-
tional difficulties and behavior
problems. Their chief need is for
psychological guidance and di-
rection in ordpr to help them be-
come useful members of society."
Dr. Friedman urged widespread
support of the $170,000,000 cam-
paign of the United Jewish Ap-
peal, from which the JDC re-
ceives its funds, in order to bring
the Jewish'child survivors of Eu-
rope re-education and adjustment
to normal life. In all, he reported,
the JDC cares for 85,000 Jewish
boys and girls on the continent,
including 35,000 youngsters liv-
ing in 243 JDC supported homes.

a foundation stone has been laid

Most of these youths were par-

Some of the youths paid for
their activities with their lives.
In 1943 the danger for Jews in

Only about one quarter of the
land is fit for cultivation and

preparation and improvement of
the soil. The remaining area is
