Committee Formed
To Seek Immigration

Of DPs Into U. S.

The Michigan Committee on
Immigration Policy for Displaced
Persons has been formecrto bring
before Congress the views of
representative Michigan groups
with respect to the situation fac-
ing displaced persons in Europe.
Mrs. Thomas M. Weber, chair-

Women's International League, is

mittee.
The Michigan Committee, to-
gether with other groups all
through the U. S., is appealing
to Congress to permit refugees to
come into this country under im-
migration quotas which were not
used during the war. Only about
one-third of these quotas have
been filled during the past ten
years.
The committee is working for

Pope Pius Expresses Concern with DP
Problems in Talks with Americans

Reports from New York, Rome,
and Montreal, this week, indicate
that Pope Piux XI has a sym-
pathetic understanding of, and is
anxious for a satisfactory solu-
tion to persecution and immigra-
tion problems besetting Jews to-
day.
In a recent audience with Dr.
Max Gottschalk, president of the
American Jewish Committee, the
Pope expressed his concern with
the DP situation, and the hope
that other countries will follow
the example of the Latin Amer-
ican nations which have received
displaced persons.
The Pope's recognition of im-
migration to America and Pales- 1
tine as the major hope for Jewish
DP's is reported by Donald
Daniels, New York industrialist,
who 'says he had a 32-minute!
private audience with the pontiff
in the Vatican. Daniels quotes the
Pope as saying that he "didn't ;
think Jews could be happy in
Europe for 100 years; that Europe
is too saturated with the blood
and bones of Jews who have died
there; that anti-Semitism is too

deeply rooted."
Louis Segal, American Zionist
Laborite leader who also was re-
ceived by the Pope, reports that
the Catholic church head has

condemning anti-Semitism at the
first opportunity.
In Montreal, Ben Obrant, Jew-
ish butcher who has contributed
to the order of the Religious
Franciscan Sisters of Mary, has
received a certificate of apostolic
benediction in which the Pope
stated that he wished his sym-
pathy for suffering Jewry to be
known.

Negotiations are in progress
for shipment of Palestine manu-
factured cotton to Sweden.
